What made you suspect the compund? You're probably right though. The fan has died or is too slow. The CPU and the video chip are what the fan is protecting. It might require a new CPU chip and fan. If it's the video chip, then a new mother board is in your future.
Good Luck
The video chip should be close. Look for a marking on the chip i.e. NVIDEA, ATI etc. I do agree not all laptops have cooling fins over the video chip. Try this. Turn on the computer and go into setup. Let the computer run in setup for as long as it takes for you to know that it should have shut down. If it runs in setup and never turns off then we know most of the mother board is fine. If possible load a linux program such as Ubuntu. (get a friend to download and put on a CD). If this loads all the way and the unit does not turn off then I would say that the mother board is OK and that a driver is suspect. If it still turns off, then a new mother board is in order.

I decided to use a shop vac to suck the dust out and it worked. I tested it by letting the machine run all night and it worked. It's been a couple of weeks now and I'm glad I did it. I was ready to take the machine apart, now I'm glad I didn't. I'd suggest you use a heavy duty shop vac to clean out the fan and heat sinks first.I agree. Try to fix the problem without taking the laptop apart first but I would recommend using a powerful air compressor instead of a vacuum cleaner.
If your laptop is still under warranty, you can take it to any Toshiba Authorize Service Provider and fix the problem at no charge to you.

I have replaced compound on a couple of M2's that have been overheating in the past, assummed this was the same problem.
Fan is definitly spinning fine, and processor is not getting hot, ( I have touched the top of CPU after it has reset and it is fine. I do suspect it may have something to do with video as sometimes the fault appears to be video related, are you sure the fan also cools the video chip, The heatsink and Fins appear to be just on the CPU? Do you know where the video chip is?
