How to disable the onboard video?

Changed Init Display setting in BIOS.
Disabled Display Adapter in Device Manager.
Installed PCI-Ex Video Card, loaded driver for it.
No help from Gateway, no help from ATI Sapphire.

Yes, the change was saved. In fact, after installing the new VidCard, BIOS automatically changed it to: PCI-Ex. And, I checked it several times later.

  • ovni347 Mar 21, 2009

Init Display is set to: PCI-Ex.

Ok, finally got a vision tek radeon hd3650 to work on the gateway gt5082 machine. i tried like so many to disable video and add a digital card to run a new lcd display. had many problems and took several hrs of try and testing. funny thing is i was trying so many things out of frustration im not sure exactly what the final steps to get it working were. i would try this first. 1 remove the existing nvidia 6000 driver via device manager. shutdown the pc and unplug. 2. reboot and go into bios. set init video -> to pciex slot. Also change the escd option to reset extended info in bios. - this is what is causing the conflict with the interrupt assignments. 3 add the new video card in pciex slot and connect the digital monitor and cable. Fire up the pc. This should now work. Any questions just ask. cbc

Confirm the card works in another system to eliminate it as a suspect. Try a beefier power supply in the machine (sometimes these 300 to 350 watt supplies just cant hang when an addon card is installed). Check the BIOS settings and make sure that the PCI Express slot resources are active for the card. If the card uses a power connector, make sure it is connected. Keep us posted.

Hi, excuse my poor english. How can I disable onboard video on a Lenovo M55e 9632AE2? Thanks in advance. Markus Brandl

There are two ways to disable the onboard video:

First Option:
When the machine boots up, watch for instructions such as "Press to enter setup, bios, configuration, ect." Within the BIOS setup should be an option to disable to onboard video. This can usually be found within an Integrated Chipset Features section or a Video section depending on your BIOS. Be careful though, messing with settings that you don't understand can affect your computer negatively.

Second Option:
Assuming you're disabling the onboard video because you have installed a video card, access the device manager by right-clicking "My Computer" and click Manage. Select the Device Manager on the navigation pane on the left, then expand the Display Adapters section. Right-click on your onboard graphics adapter and then click Disable and you're done!

Have a dell dimension e520. Trying so install geforce 6200 pci graphics adapter. Tried to do what has been suggested online. Disable previous onboard adapter in device manager. Now wont boot to allow me to...

You don't disable it in Device Manager: reenable it immediately. The correct steps to replace the video card:
1 - you uninstall its driver and reboot at least twice.
2 - You install the new card, plug the Monitor in it and reboot at least once.
3 - you enter in the BIOS and disable it in there, and only in there, and you reboot at least twice with a check in the BIOS that it has remained disabled in between.
3 - you install the new driver.

Pc powers up but no video on screen gateway 420gr desktop

Yes generally speaking when you drop in a videocard it typically will disable the built on one. You may have to disable it though. I know you said you did not see the onboard video in BIOS but there is almost always a setting in there to turn it off.

If you plug in a pci video card, sometimes the bios, not Windows disables the card on board.
If the onboard video is not being disabled from bios, then you will be able to use either one or the other video cards, no need to disable it manually.
If your system takes both cards and you want to disable one, then go to system properies/hardware/device manager and disable the unwanted video card from device list by ticking disable on device profile.

I assume you have switched the monitor cable in the back to your video card before booting up. Also you must disable the onboard video and driver too by Start----->Control Panel----->System----->Hardware----->Device Manager and make sure the driver for the onboard video is disabled. You have to also change the BIOS settings by rebooting and pressing F4, F1, F2 or F6 (varies on computers) Once in BIOS, you have to use the arrow keys, Esc and Enter to navigate. Goto the Video Display options and change the onboard video to your new card 256 MB. Collow on screen promts to save it and reboot again. Should work now.

Hp compaq dc5000 small form factor

Hi, uninstalling the onboard video will only be reinstalled by Windows next time you boot up. Disabling it in the Device Manager might and mght not do the trick if your mb is set on using the onboard. You might want to try and disable the onboard video in the CMOS/BIOS set-up. In some instances, you are asked in the BIOS what video will be used such as onboard, AGP or PCI or a selection of something like that. Also you can try and not allocating any memory to the onboard video. Hope this be of some help. Pls post again how things turn up. Good luck.
