The dimmer switch you select will depend on the type of bulbs you will be using. The 'original type ' of dimmer works with regular incandescent bulbs and halogen bulbs only. They cost around $15.00. Then there are dimmers for compact florescent (cfl) bulbs and LED lights that are dimmable, as well for regular light bulbs. These types of dimmers are more expensive, ranging in price form around $40.00 upwards.
Light Switches Dimmers

If you are replacing a single pole switch ( just one switch that operates lights) you'll need a single pole dimmer. If you are replacing a 3-way switch ( two switches that operate the same light) you'll need a 3-way dimmer.
Installing the dimmer is pretty straight forward. All dimmers come with installation instructions. Make sure you turn off the circuit breaker for the particular switch you are replacing.

SOURCE: different outlet went out after installing dimmer.

It's possible that he living room outlet feeds through the dining room switch and that a wire may have become disconnected when you put in the dimmer. I don't know the specifics of you home layout. If the dining room and living room are on different circuit breaker switches, this is not the problem.

Hi, I've got a problem with inset spotlights

check your wirenut connections in the first fixture. over time, perhaps, the wirenuts may have come loose. other times there is a thermal overload in each fixture which opens because of excess heat.

I have bought Crabtree dimmer switch but it came without wiring instructions. There are 3 terminals, one marked L1, one L2 and the other with a wavy line with an arrow across it. Which one does the 'line'...

This is a 2way dimmer the wavy line is the common so your live supply will connect to this terminal .For 2way switching your strappers go in L1 L2 if you only require 1 way switching use either for your feed out to the fitting and disregard the spare terminal.

Downstairs toilet light switch needs rewiring

Yes, run a black wire from connector (a) to one terminal of your new light fitting if you are installing a metal fitting you will need to connect an earth wire also.

If you are reusing the same pull switch and it is still connected as you describe then the floating end near the light is probably the switched live conductor, so you could connect this to the live terminal of the new light. but be careful it may be live.

Caution always disconnect the power before working on electrical wiring.

Please remember to rate this solution.
