I got a Dell c640 Latitude. My CD ROM drive gets detected , but I'm unable to view the CD contents as the Drive doesn't change after the CD is inserted to the drive.

I tried different CDs. Still this problem is not solved.
And my laptop has detachable CD ROM provision.
If i re-install the O/S after formatting, will it get solved?

Sounds like your Cats eye or laser is out of adjustment. You might try ebay or some of your local computer shops. Your looking at a pretty old laptop you should beable to find parts up on the internet.
Good Luck

I put the dvd in and nothing pops up, so where do go to view the dvd

Be sure that the DVD unit is plugged correctly into the laptop. Second, if nothing "pops", go to my computer and open from there the dvd content. If the dvd it's not present on My computer, it means that it's not correctly connected, or it's broken.

How to get DVD out of Dell Latitude that is dead!

Hello there:
there is a very small hole located on the front of the drive just insert a paperclip in the hole until you feel it a solid object now just press in a little bit further and you will feel it trip the door mechanism and the tray will open it may not be all of the way but it will be far enough so you can get the cd rom out if this still does not work
You will have to remove the plastic strip above the keys and find the 2 or three very small screws and remove them and now the whole cd rom will slide out of the computer now if you want to just remove the cover off the cd rom and you would be able to get to your cd that is in the drive ok?
I hope that this helped you out a lot
best regards Michael

C640 can't boot up

Ok.Better reinstall the os.Because disk boot error cannot be solved is suppose...To install the os follow these steps.

Step 1:Power on your system and press DEL key

You will see a blue screen with some options on it in white. (you can only use your keyboard to navigate in this screen). Go to the Advanced Setup Options ---> then select Boot Priority ---> 1st Boot device to be Floppy drive , 2nd Boot device to be CD-Rom drive

Step 2:Insert the Bootable DOS floppy in your Floppy Drive. Press F10 to save the bios settings and exit. (Your system will re-start automatically)

Step 3: Let the Dos load from the floppy and A: shows up.

Step 4: Change the Command prompt to HDD Drive letter, it will be D: or E in which u have Xp cd contenet. And type If xp content in d:under x folder mean.D:cd\x and press enter.

If you go to control panel/system/hardware/device manager. You can roll back to your previous driver. Unless of course it wasn't working then either. In that case disregard this solution : )

Dell latitude c640

Hi

Both Dell Part numbers 18THT and 5W299 are 8X DVD-ROM Drive Modules. DPN 18THT is compatible with Latitude C series and DPN 5W299 is compatible with Latitude D series. The two drives have different and incompatible connectors.

Your Latitude C640 is a C Series Latitude. You can therefore not use DPN 5W299.

If you need a DVD drive module, get DPN 18THT or an alternative Latitude C series drive.
