Need to gain access to inside of 90 series kenmore washer

I looked up my problem here on fixya, and indeed the lid switch on my kenmore 90 series washer is broken. how do I get inside of this washer to change out the switch the top is bolted down on all 4 corners, and I don't see any easy way to get in this machine, there is not enough slack on the wiring harness to pull out the switch from under the top to gain access to the washer lid switch

How do I replace the lid switch on kenmore 80 series?

Hi and welcome to FixYa. Before you start UNPLUG the washer. There are 2 ways to open the top of the machine to gain access to the lid switch. The easy way is to grasp the top inside the top of the wash tub with the lid open pulling hard toward your waist and up. It usually opens right up. Some of them can be stubborn and you have to use a putty knife to release the spring tabs located about 4 inches from each top corner in the space between the cabinet base and the top panel. Press in on the tabs one at a time with the putty knife and pull up. The top will open. Then it is a matter of removing the mounting screws and connecting the new switch.

Thanks for choosing FixYa.

Series 90 with loud buzzing/grinding noise, won't spin

It could have gone out of balance. See if the drum looks off center and center it if necessary. Turn it off and back on to reset the switch. If that doesn't work, try pressing on the lid either 2/3 of the way back on the right or all the way back on the left (depends on the model -- try both) and see if it starts. If it does, I would suspect the lid switch.

Replaced Kenmore 90 coupler - now NOTHING works!

First, see the Sears parts site for your washer:
http://www.searspartsdirect.com/partsdirect/index.action

Enter your model number (###.######) and you'll see a list of major sub-components with diagrams and parts.

The first and easiest question is: Did you remember to re-connect the Lid Switch???

If it still won't agitate or spin, I'd check that the Motor coupler was installed correctly and hasn't destroyed itself.

I'd also test the switch.

Try to bypass the Lid Switch by removing the Console and jumping the two outermost pins on the switch.

This is a Whirlpool PDF on how these washers operate. It has a diagram on jumping the switch as well as a detailed section on how the transmission works.

https://secured.whirlpool.com/Service/SrvTechAdm.nsf/2cd44500d572193285256a45004fd9d6/f7e2147fa98b28cf85257122007475cb/$FILE/L-55.pdf

It also has a troubleshooting guide.

To bypass the switch, you only have to disconnect the power to the washer, tilt the console back, unplug the switch and using an short piece of insulated wire, jump the two outermost contacts on the connector coming from the console and plug the washer back in.

Following is a description of how to gain access to the console and how to remove the cabinet if necessary.

http://www.american-appliance.com/catalog/newsdesk_info.php?newsPath=16&newsdesk_id=131&osCsid=913ba652cd504fb162f87d892bcb427b

With the jumper in place, try to re-start the washer.

If it works, the Lid Switch is a relatively inexpensive part and only requires you to access the console and remove the cabinet.

I HAVE A KENMORE 90 SERIES WASHER JUST REPLACED

it mounts to the metal where the lid closes, not on the drum... there's usually two holes where the screws go through... and a third hole where the actuator(plastic post) on the lid goes through to activate the lid switch...
