It sounds like the lens fluid has gone sour. Take a look at this Fixya tip for more information on replacing the lens coolant. When it's real bad you won't be able to see the crosshairs sometimes. http://www.fixya.com/support/r11932741-convergence_repair_dull_video_repair

Your TV most likely has one or more possible problems.

Problem #1: Convergence Chip Failure ( common problem )

Here are some of the most common symptoms and example photos of a convergence problem

  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.

Here is a quick test....

Using your original remote go-to the tv settings then goto the convergence section.

Try to adjust the red and then the blue convergence.

You should be able to move them up, down, left, and right.

If you can't move them in all directions your convergence chips are bad and should be replaced. This is a common problem.

You need to replace the convergence chips and convergence resistors. Check the site www.TvRepairKits.com. They have put together a kits for most models. If you don't see a kit for your set send them a quick note and they will put one together for you. Their kits include a photo instruction guide, original OEM Sanyo STK chips, convergence resistors, pico fuses, etc.

Problem #2 CRT Fluid is Cloudy

Projection TV tubes have a liquid coolant that is used to keep them from overheating. After many years the coolant in the blue and green tubes will become cloudy and cause the screen to look dull, red/orange, etc. You may even see halos around images.

What you will need to do is replace the coolant and clean the crt. You can get a repair kit from www.TvRepairKits.com that includes replacement coolant, photos. instructions, etc.

I'm not quite sure about the convergence issue, but the glowing white haze is a sign that the fluid in the color tubes is dirty and usually can only be fixed if the fluids are changed out(draining and refilling). This is not recommended for someone who does not know what they are doing, it is best to get an expert to do this work because it can be dangerous as well as hazardous to your television and quite expensive. Mostly all rear projection televisions will have this issue, but I find that just upgrading to a newer-model television is usually better, maybe a flat panel LCD(Liquid Crystal Display)(stay away from unknown brands and plasmas, although Vizio's LCDs will get you more bang for your buck). On an LCD, all you really have to worry about is cracking the liquid-crystal display, which is quite fragile, but can be avoided if no hands or objects touch the LCD. On the other hand, best of luck in fixing your Philips rear-projection.

Does it take some type of gel under the lights, the colors are a little blurry

i also have this tv. i removed backcleaned mirrior, back of screen and lenses VERY GOOD. Then turned on tv go to convergence, sepaerate cross hairs then adjust focus on lenses. Then lenses rotate maybe about a 1/3 turn total by hand. Grab ring that houses lenses and turn until cross hairs are as clear as possible. This can be done with out help by watching inside of screen. red and green are adjustable, the blue is adjustablealso but i couldnt find blue cross hairs, maybe by covering red and green lenses the blue will show on screen. anyway when done and cross hairs are clear, lenses, mirror and screen are clean, you can adjust covergence and get a very clear screencleaning will also brighten pic.
