I would place the e260 in MSC mode first, as Vista should support this Sansa.
Unplug the player, then from the e260 do the following:
go to Settings, then choose System Settings then USB Mode & select MSC. Next, connect the E260, Vista should now see the player properly.

How do i update my firmware

It is pretty easy. If running Windows just download the Sansa Updater (see link below) and install it.

Then, use the Mac/Linux instructions (even if running windows!) to put the e260 into MSC mode- turn e260 on, switch e260 hold switch to on, press and hold the e260s LEFT button "<<" while you plug the USB cable into the e260.

For me (running Windows XP) the Sansa updater automatically detected the e260 then and updated the e260's firmware.

Links to the updater, and alternative complete instructions for Mac/Linux are here

How do I get my Sansa e260 to appear in Windows Media Player (v. 11; Vista)?

Try this: disconnect the player from the computer, hold in the volume + button, and reconnect the player to the computer while holding the volume + button in. Keep holding the volume + button for an additional 5-50 seconds. Windows should eventually go into recovery mode and revive the player- it will pop up a window that says Found New Hardware Wizard.

Not recognized.

Have you downloaded the firmware from sandisk?

Also, have you gone to Windows Media Player 11 and tried to sync it?

When you plug the Sansa in, Vista should recognize and the Sansa should show connected. XP should do the same thing.
