To Drop or Raise the Feed Dogs

To drop the feed dogs, press the lever in the direction of the arrow, (it is a vertical metallic bar at the right side of of the shuttle area)

To raise the feed dogs, push the lever in the direction of the arrow, and turn handwheel towards you. Feed dogs must be up for normal sewing..

You need to complete one full revolution of handwheel to re-engage feeddogs....or there is lint trapped under needleplate...clean it out !!

SOURCE: My kenmore 385 won't feed fabric

Check to see what pattern is selected. Be sure it isn't the buttonhole.Select straight stitch.Move the stitch length setting to 4.Turn the handwheel and see if the feed dogs move forward. Press the reverse lever and see if they move backwards. Select straight stretch stitch and turn the wheel to see if the feed dogs move forward and backward.Check the presser foot release on top of the machine and make sure there is pressure on the foot.
Sometimes the reverse assembly on this machine stops working because it has the wrong type of grease on it and it turns into a hard gummy mess that won't let it work.

SOURCE: feed dog not pulling fabric

First, remove the needle plate and using a small screwdriver, clean the packed lint from in between the teeth. This will allow the teeth to go up.

How do you adjust the feed dog height on a Kenmore 1690 (158.16900) sewing machine?

To adjust the feed dog height on a Kenmore 1690 (158.16900) sewing machine, you can follow these steps:
  1. Turn off the sewing machine and unplug it from the power source for safety.
  2. Remove the needle and presser foot from the machine.
  3. Locate the feed dog adjustment screw, which is usually located on the backside of the sewing machine, near the feed dogs.
  4. Use a screwdriver to loosen the feed dog adjustment screw. It might be a slotted screw or a thumbscrew, depending on the model.
  5. Gradually adjust the height of the feed dogs by turning the adjustment screw clockwise or counterclockwise. Clockwise rotation raises the feed dogs, while counterclockwise rotation lowers them. Make small adjustments and test with a scrap fabric after each turn to achieve the desired height.
  6. Once you have set the feed dog height, tighten the adjustment screw securely.
  7. Reinstall the needle and presser foot, and plug in the sewing machine.
  8. Test the machine with a piece of fabric to ensure the feed dogs are working properly and at the desired height.
It is important to consult the sewing machine manual for specific instructions related to your model, as the location of the adjustment screw may vary.

I have an old Kenmore Convertible 1785 machine. It is working fine except it won't pull fabric thru. Any suggestions on what could be wrong?

Are the feed dogs in the up position? Is your fabric very slippery or silky? If it is you need to use a tear away for the feed dogs to grab on to I order to move the fabric forward.

Singer model 518....the material won't feed through. It wants to sew but won't feed cloth through. Thks

Be sure you have the stitch length set high enough that the fabric will actually move instead of sewing mostly in one spot.

One other thing to check is the presser foot applying enough pressure to the fabric so that the feed dogs can grab the fabric? On the top left side of the machine, there is probably either a dial or a push-type button. That would most likely be the pressure adjustment. The tighter that is set, the harder the pressure the presser foot will apply and the more the feed dogs will grab the fabric.

Check that the feed dogs are in the "up" position so they will pull the fabric through the machine. Are the feed dogs actually moving forward, raising above the needle plate, pulling toward the back of the machine, and then dropping below the needleplate before moving forward again? If not, then the problem could be with the feed dogs.

Your machine appears to be a mechanical model. If so, it could be the machine needs a good over-all cleaning and oiling--a couple drops of fresh, good quality sewing machine oil every place that metal rubs on metal (no plastic parts, belts...). Feed dogs are frequently affected when the sewing machine does not receive regular maintenance.

Just wanted to check troubleshooting ideas on the feed dogs. They seem to be engaged but not running fabric through when sewing

Check that the stitch length is set to make ~10 stitches per inch. This stitch is long enough to actually move the fabric. If the stitch length is set too short, the fabric will stay barely move and the needle will stitch almost in place.

Check that the feed dogs have not been dropped for darning or free motion quilting. In this position, they do not rise and are, therefore, unable to contact the fabric to pull it through the machine.

With the presser foot raised and using no fabric, hand rotate the handwheel and watch if the feed dogs actually drop down below the needle plate, move toward the front of the machine, then rise above the needle plate, and move toward the back of the machine. If the feed dogs are moving in this manner, then they are functioning properly.

Is there lint or gunk stuck in the feed dogs? This will restrict the ability of the feed dogs to grip the fabric.

Are the feed dogs worn? Are the little teeth worn so there are no sharp points?

What type fabric are you using? If it is very light-weight or slick fabric, the feed dogs will have a difficult time gripping the fabric. Most machines have a presser foot pressure adjustment so that more pressure is applied between the presser foot and the feed dogs. Consult your Owner's Manual. The adjustment is usually a dial either on the left side of the machine, on the front of the machine located above the needle bar, or on vintage machines it is usually a skrew located under the top lid above the needle bar.

Feed dogs are not pulling the material back

White sewing machine model 510, feed dog problem; fabric is not moving; I must firmly pull fabric through.

The feed dog is moving; fabric is not.

The fabric is not feeding properly; the fabric goes back and forth. However, the fabric does not continue to move away from me.

The feed dog is positioned up and is not smooth, it feels rough when I touch it with my fingers.

Because I had not used this sewing machine for a couple of years, before sewing, I cleaned the inside with the wire brush that came with the machine.

In an attempt to trouble shoot the problem, I applied varying pressure foot levels and stitch lengths.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to what may be the problem?
