Do i need to remove the engine from the car to change the timing chains

I don't know of any motor that requires the head to be removed to change a timing chain or belt.

The water pump on this vehicle is driven off the timing chain. You need to pull most of the front of the engine off to get access to it, including removal of the timing chain. This is not a job for the uninformed. Any error in removal/replacement can and will cause permanent engine damage. Unless you are really skilled at engine mechanics, leave this job to the pros.

Impossible. This is a dual cam engine. There is a camshaft in each cylinder head. The head cannot be removed without removing the timing chain.

1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
2. Remove engine assembly from vehicle.
3. Remove oil pan.
4. Remove cylinder head cover.
5. Remove timing chain cover as follows:
   • Remove crankshaft pulley bolt. To lock crankshaft pulley, use special tool 09917-68221 (camshaft pulley holder).

Be sure to use the following bolts instead of pins for fixing special tool to crankshaft pulley. Bolt size: M8, P1.25 L = 25 mm (0.98 in.) Strength: 7T

• Remove crankshaft pulley. To remove crankshaft pulley, use special tools 09944-36011 and 09926-58010 (steering wheel remover and bearing puller attachment).
• Remove A/C compressor bracket.
• Remove alternator belt idler pulley, water pump pulley and alternator belt tensioner.
• Remove timing chain cover bolts and nut.

1. For reinstallation of timing chain, turn crankshaft so that timing marks on cylinder head and lower crankcase match with those on sprockets as shown in figure.
2. Remove second timing chain as follows:
   • Turn crankshaft to meet following conditions.
     • Key (I) on crankshaft is positioned as shown.
     • Arrow mark on idler sprocket (II) points upward.
     • Marks on sprockets (III) match with marks on cylinder head. Note that this step must be followed for reinstallation of timing chain.
   • Remove timing chain tensioner adjuster No.2 and gasket. To remove them, slacken second timing chain by turning intake camshaft counterclockwise a little while pushing back pad.
   • Remove intake and exhaust camshaft timing sprocket bolts. To remove them, fit a spanner to hexagonal part at the center of camshaft to hold it stationary.
   • Remove camshaft timing sprockets and second timing chain.

After second timing chain is removed, never turn intake camshaft, exhaust camshaft and crankshaft independently more than such an extent as shown. If turned, interference may occur between piston and valves and valves themselves, and parts related to piston and valves may be damaged.

1. Remove timing chain guide No.1.
2. Remove timing chain tensioner adjuster No.1.
3. Remove timing chain tensioner.
4. Remove idler sprocket and first timing chain.
5. Remove crankshaft timing sprocket.

Has the oil seldom been changed on
that motor since it was new?

Water Pump & Chain issues

Seems most chrysler engines have problems
especially 4 cylinders

make sure the engine is at TDC on compression stroke, remove all the parts to get to the timing gears, remove the bolts that fasten the cam gear to the camshaft, the crankshaft gear should just slide off but make sure you dont loose the keyway in the sump as this will cause a delay in the repair.
dont turn the engine at all when you are doing this as it will put your timing out, take the camgear off the shaft with the timing chain, you will be able to remove the timing chain now. when you replace the timing chain you need to put the chain onto the camgear and then onto the crankgear, there should be an arrow on each gear which has to line up without turning the engine, unless the crankgear has been moved you will only need to move the camgear on the chain (not the actual cam) until the arrows line up and it lines up with the retaining bolt holes for the camgear.

Remove the upper balance shaft chain guide, then the chain-2.2L (VIN F) engine

no thats not true
there is a way to change the chain with out all the work.
there is a tool and you have to connect the new chain to the old and turn the engine over until the new chain is wrapped up and back through.
then you just connect the chain back together at the end.
its that simple with the chain install tool.
it keeps all the links a wheel teeth in the same order without disturbing the timing.
if the timing has been disturbed then the whool front of the engine and the car needs to come off.
the radiator support braket comes off in the center opening the whool front end to service the engine block.
you will not need to remove the engine to service the timing chain tensioner and or chain if it has jumped timing or the incorrect service has been performed disturbing the timing.
the ac condesor and the rad fans and the rad all need to bee removed to gain access to the front engine block.allways be very careful when doing service on these cars and never force nothing.all so before you try to turn the belt adjuster screw you must allways release the tensioner bolt in the center or you will i promise distroy the belt tensioner.

the timing chanin is behind the timing chain cover on the passenger side of the engine. u must remove the crank pulley to remove the cover.

no you do not have to remove the engine to service the timing chain

Well, waterpump on your car is internal inside the timing chain area, being driven by the timing chain. You need to remove drive belts, the small black side covers, that are screwed into the front engine cover. The left on has the chain tensioner, the right one has the water pump behind it. Once the covers are removed, you need to push the timing chain tensioner inside and put a pin inside of it (tensioner ) to hold it in. Once you have done that, you need to rotate the engine counterclockwise (until you feel tension) to loosen the chain around the water pump. Then you will use 2 bolts (6mm and about 2 inches long) and screw those into the water pump body. This will pull the pump out of the engine, so pretty much the bolts are going to be acting as puller device to remove pump out of engine. reverse install procedure. This is not the easiest of repairs and not for a novice or someone, that doesn't really work on cars. Good luck.
