Monitor screen picture won't stay on for longer than a second

I have an e-machine computer and monitor. The monitor comes on with the log on screen when the computer is turned on, however, it won't stay on. The monitor screen continues to "blink" on and off. The power light stays on but I cannot log on as the screen only stays up for a fraction of a second then goes black. Just wondering if it is the monitor or the computer?

I had the same problem with my eMachine t3418. Site advisor Micromend suggested changing the power supply to more wattage. Very much recommend doing that. I did but it didn't fix the problem. Micromend also advised trying a video card. I bought a cheap vid card and installed it. It worked. Apparently MY problem was in the motherboard and the vid card worked around that. Much cheaper than replacing the computer. I'm NOT a tech. Just sharing my experience with what worked for me. I you have a laptop or a friend does, hook your monitor to it to test that it's okay first though.

Dell st2410b monitor won't stay lit

Ok, same issue here as well. Monitor would come on for 1/2 second and then the backlighting will go off. It's next to impossible to tell, but if you shine a bright flashlight at the screen, you can make out the video signal/desktop.

I have now replaced all the Capacitors except the very large one (didn't come with the kit that was available.) None of my caps looked bad (bulging) including the large one. Unfortunately, I still habe the same issue

So my question is....large capacitor replacement or something else?

Make sure that your computer isn't going into Standby or Hibernate mode. You can test this by briefly pressing the power button and wait to see if the screen comes back on.

The screen went black after few seconds.

Hello Chris,

You have a monitor with a common problem. After a few years some LCD monitors will blow a power supply. The problem is caused by parts called capacitors overheating in the confined space of he monitor. If you are good at electronics repair/soldering you can usually fix he problem. Check out a few pictures on my web site www.ccl-la.com/badcaps.htm You can take the back cover off your monitor and look for the bad parts, replace any that look like the pictues and your monitor should work fine. The capacitors do need to be installed with the correct + and - connections, note the strip on the old one and insert the new one the same way. If you don't want to try the repair yourself we offer a repair service for $35 plus shipping. I hope this helps, if so please rate my solution.

My monitor keeps going to a black screen a coulpe of seconds after being turned on

Video (picture) must be constantly entering a monitor for a monitor to continue to display a picture after it self tests (goes on for a second or, two) Your monitor is fine; check it using another known good computer.

Monitor comes on, I can see everything perfect then goes black

"Most" newer monitors will let you know if the are no longer receiving a signal. Sounds like the backlight is burnt out. Try getting a bright (LED works best) flashlight and shining it at the screen at all angles to see if you can see any of what you were doing. If the backlight is on the fritz, either return it on warranty or buy a new one.

HP mx705 17 in.CRT Conventional Monitor vertical goes bad

While it is sounding like a hardware problem. I'll throw in my 2 cents. Have you check the cables from the power to the source and from the monitor to the computer. Just make sure those aren't loose. One other thing...you mentioned you turn off the computer "afterwards" then it fixes itself. Is the fix for longer than it turns on at first? or does it stay on longer then goes out? Let me know what happens. Good Luck, Tim
