I have a Compaq 610 running Windows 7 Ultimate. The problem here is that it is not charging when it is plugged in. It does take power from the power supply but the battery is not charging. The power supply (from the transformer to the computer) is genuine HP and this laptop has always used that transformer, the rest (plug to transformer) I don't know. Also, we have changed the battery and after a day the same thing starts to happen. I would appreciate any help regarding this problem and if there is anything I failed to mention please let me know. The battery is the original one that was in the laptop intitially.. and so was the other one (in another lapotp we own same model) Also, the laptop has been with us for 4 years but what I don't get is why so suddenly... I mean when a battery is dead doesn't it degrade but still charge only less?
If the laptop
battery is more than 3 - 4 years old then the battery could be worn out.
Rechargeable batteries have a finite number of charge and discharge cycles and
will lose their charge capacity over time, i.e. won't charge to 100% and
gradually the charge reduces until the battery won't charge up at all. OR The
battery shows a 100% charge but when the adapter is disconnected the battery
drops off to zero capacity in a very short time. If the battery drops to an
unacceptable charge level then the battery needs to be replaced.
Rechargeable batteries will fail if stored in a discharged
state for long periods.
Testimonial: "But that doesn't explain how come a working battery isn't charging after I replaced it with the other non-charging one. i.e., before I put it in this laptop it was working fine."

These devices are more like cellphones. You charge it when it needed some charging. Once full, you remove it from the main plug and use the battery. If you do otherwise, it'll shorten the lifespan of the battery.
Running programs themselves do not directly cause damage to the physical device. They may form as one of the elements that can cause, say your processor to work harder and therefore needing more power from the battery. But apart from that I think it's wrong to say that programs themselves were the caused of the battery failure.

The rechargeable battery needs to be replaced, go to www.ebay.com type make and model of laptop, refine search to battery.

Whenyou connect the power adapter into the laptop, does the power LED lightup? If not then -The battery adapter or the adapter's power lead or the laptop's powersocket could be faulty.Check power adapter's DCplug that connects into the laptop power socket with a multi-meter, the voltageshould be slightly higher than the voltage that is printed on the label on thebottom of the adapter. If the voltage is zero or way below the voltage that isprinted on the label then the power adapter is faulty and needs to be replaced. If the adapter is OK thenconnect it to the laptop and power it up, then look at the power/batterycharging LED light and wriggle the power plug in the laptop's powersocket. If the power/battery LED light flashes and in a certain position thisLED light stays firm, then the power socket is either faulty or it has a drysolder joint where it is connected to the motherboard. This can be repaired but itrequires the laptop to be completely dismantled to get at this power socket andrepair. If you cannot DIY then I suggest you get a quote first.

Okay, if the unit boots okay, and only getting to 80% charge it could be a Windows 7 issue not reporting the charge correctly. Check the Microsoft Knowledge base for a resolution.
Otherwise it could be a faulty mainboard.
Your motherboard has gone bad. The best thing to do is buy a new laptop. You can find a replacement motherboard online but after the cost of the part, shipping, and the pain of removing 100 screws, it just isn't worth it.
