PISTON VALVE

On some dishwashers that have a filter (screen) along the back wall of the tub have a piston valve. The piston valve commonly causes dishwashers not to pump out. if your dishwasher does have a filter, remove it. Now remove the piston valve located in the center behind the filter. Now to check the piston valve, press up on the spring. Once done the piston should stop up the hole in the top of the valve. When a piston valve, is bad the piston dissolves to the point that it can no longer stop up the hole, in this case replace it.

DRAIN SOLENOID

Another common problem on some dishwashers that will cause it not to drain properly is the drain solenoid. To check this, first disconnect power from dishwasher then remove the bottom panel of dishwasher. Once off, you should see the drain solenoid attached to the main pump then reach under the dishwasher and push down on the solenoid. If it will not move down it is bad and needs replacing. If it will push, down most of the time it is good but not always so follow these steps as well. Reconnect power to dishwasher, now start the dishwasher in to a cycle. If you have a mechanical timer turn it slowly until the solenoid energizes. If you turn the timer all the way around and the solenoid never energizes replace the solenoid. If you have an electronic control, start the dishwasher and wait a few minutes then push start/reset then the drain solenoid should energizes, if not replace the solenoid. At times the timer will cause this part to go bad especially if its melted or frozen down. So you may have to replace the timer as well.

CHECK VALVE

If your dishwasher is not draining properly, the check valve may be your problem. The check valve will be on some dishwashers with both a separate drain pump (note if you do not have both you will not have a check valve). The check valve will be located where the black hose connects to the drain pump. To access the check valve, you must first remove the water from the dishwasher. A Wet-Vac works well. After the water is out, disconnect power to dishwasher. Now remove the dishwasher from under the cabinet. Now remove the black hose (even though you removed the water you will still have water in the pump so be ready).Once off you should see the check valve. It's the little red rubber flap. If it is torn off, the flap may have gone down the drain but you still should see the red ring left behind, in this case replace the valve. Sometimes the check valve will swell up and hang in the pump, if so replace it.

If your dishwasher is not draining properly, the drain pump may be your problem. As stated before, not all dishwashers will have a drain pump. To check this, First check to see if it is getting power. You should have 120 volts when the dishwasher is put into a drain cycle. If you have power and the pump does not run remove the pump and check for obstructions if none found replace the pump.

If your dishwasher is not draining properly, the drain hose may be stopped up. To check, remove all the water from tub. A Wet-Vac works well for this. After the water is gone remove the drain hose (even though you removed the water you will still have water in the pump so be ready) from the house plumbing and the dishwasher. Check for obstructions and remove. If you just installed a new garbage disposal check that the metal knockout was removed. . Check the air gap if this is not right your dishwasher will siphon water back into it.

1 Turn off the circuit breaker that controls the dishwasher.
2 Open the dishwasher door. Locate the two small screws holding the bottom valance trim piece. Remove the screws and the valance, revealing the lower pump assembly and drain-hose connection.
3 Remove the hose clamp. Disconnect the drain line by pulling the hose.
4 Find the other end of the drain line under the sink; it is connected to the drain tail piece or the garbage disposal. Remove the hose clamp and disconnect the drain line. The dishwasher drain hose is now disconnected at both ends.
5 Pull the dishwasher drain hose into the sink base through the hole between the dishwasher and the sink base.
6 Take the dishwasher drain hose outside or to a wash sink. Run hot water through the line to clean and unclog it. When you see water running freely through the hose, then it is clean. If the hose cannot be cleaned, replace it with a new drain hose of the same size and length.
7 Feed the clean dishwasher drain hose back to its original configuration. Reconnect both hose clamps. Reinstall the valance, turn on the circuit breaker and test-run the dishwasher.

You will have to completely uninstall the dishwasher to replace the drain hose assembly.

Once the unit is out of the cabinet drain hose replacement is fairly easy.

Thanks for using FixYa. Dishwasher not draining properly or not draining at all issues can arise due to different reasons. Usually, these issues are related to kinked hoses, knocked out disposer unit (if connected with the dishwasher drain hose) & clogged drain pump & filter.

Also note that dishwashers do not drain completely after a finished cycle and this is normal. Dishwashers are designed to leave some water in the unit to ensure that the heating element doesn’t overheat. If you suddenly begin to experience a large amount of water being retained in your dishwasher, you have a problem. Some of the most common reasons include that the drain hose isn’t working properly, the drain pump isn’t working correctly, or possibly there is a plumbing problem in your home’s drain lines.



First check whether the drain is not clogged or blocked and the line is not kinked. Check all the hoses for blockages & also clean the air gap. Has the disposer been replaced recently? If so, chances are the knockout is still in place. Simply remove the drain hose from the disposer, and knock out the plug. If the disposer has not been replaced, try removing the drain hose from the disposer and use a wet-dry vacuum (prepared for water, of course) to **** any water (and hopefully anything else) from the drain line. Then reconnect the hose, and test the unit. If you have checked the air gap and the drain hose and can’t locate the problem, then it is an issue with the drain pump of the dishwasher.

The Drain Hose kinked or blocked. Wiring connection is OK? The drain outlet of sump is blocked. The Drain Pump/Motor or circuit is troubled.
Remove the cause of kink or block. Check the wiring connection. Measure the electric resistance of Drain Motor. (20-40 ) Replace the Drain Motor or repair the Circuit.

Hi. this may be caused be several issue that i will discus below. Kindly read over the list that will describe several issue that may be apparent. replace any parts that corresponds to the issue you are having.


1. Air gap / Drain hoses
If there is an air gap (located in the sink, near the faucet), check to see if it is clogged. Unscrew the top cap and see if there is anything blocking inside. Note: If there is no air gap installed, the dishwasher might not drain properly.

If the drain hose is clogged, the dishwasher would not drain. If there is an air gap installed, it is very common that a hose going from the air gap into the garbage disposer is clogged. Remove and clean the hose. Make sure to reattach the hose before starting the dishwasher.

Note: If you recently had a garbage disposer installed, it is common to overlook removing the drain plug.

2. Broken belt
Some dishwasher models use a belt to drive the pump. Replace the belt if found broken.

Note: Sometimes the belt would just come off the pump. Even though it might not be broken, it is recommended that you replace the belt, because it is probably too stretched out.

3. Pump
Some models have two impellers inside the pump - one, wash impeller, takes care of the wash cycles, the other, drain impeller, drains the water out. If the drain impeller is broken (broken blades, shaft), the dishwasher would not drain. Replace any broken pump components.

4. Drain solenoid
Some models (for example most GE dishwashers) use a drain solenoid to drain water out. Sometimes the solenoid gets stuck, preventing the water from draining out. Try to free up the solenoid. If unsuccessful, you might have to replace the pump assembly.

5. Motor
If the motor is stuck, it is sometimes possible to free it up by manually spinning the motor.

Replace the motor if defective.

6. Timer
Replace if defective (note: uncommon problem).

Hello, I have just installed a similar model, and took the side panel off to see how it was put together ;)

The drain hose goes in the back of the dishwasher, then loops up the right side (as you are looking at the front)(this is to act as a "trap" to keep sewer gases from coming back into your washer, I assume), and then connects to the drain pump under the washer.

In order the change the hose, you will need to remove the left side panel, and the bottom panel, and this will give you access to the entire hose....
