The Region setting maybe incorrect.
To change
the Region code on your DVD player, open Control Panel - System - Hardware -
Device manager, and click on DVD/CD ROM drives, then right click on the DVD
drive and click Properties then click on DVD Region.
You can enter a new region and it also shows you how many changes have been
made.
NOTE you can make only 4 changes and the player will lock permanently on the
4th change.
If you want to play DVDs from any region you maybe able to upgrade the firmware
to make it region free BUT if you make a mistake or installed the wrong
firmware the player will be a piece of junk.
The best solution to make the player region free is to install a piece of
software (Passkey for DVD) that allows you to play DVDs from any region and
Passkey for Blueray that allows you to play Bluerays from any region.
There are
several available on the Internet but my favourite is DVD-Region Free

Try another DVD-RW drive because it sounds like the laser is going bad. Burning requires alot of power from the laser. Playing DVD or playing cd's doesn't require much so thats why it would play those.
You need a program, like nero. if that doesn't work then put a DVD in the drive & see if the computer picks it up in the my computer. the first thing that goes in a CD/DVD-RW drive is the DVD heads, thats if your drive is a CD/DVD-RW. Have a look on the front of the drive tray, if it say CD-RW DVD ROM then it doesn't burn DVD's it only plays them.
my desktop computer will not write to a dvd, but will play a dvd
& my laptop will play a cd but will only write to a dvd
it's just the way the drives are,,I've tried different types of dvd also nothing helped
Hi , does it play cdroms ? if not , you have a driver problem , so , 1st- lets go to the control panel , look for device manager , next find the DVD/cdrom and click on that to see what driver you have , next right click on the driver and click scan for hardware changes , if that does'nt work , remove the driver all together and reboot your computer to load the right driver , you can also right click on the driver and go to prop. and see if the device is working correctly ................let me know ...............................Good luck Roy
It would depend on the source file you are using. Most video players out in the market today are capable of playing WMV, MP4 & AVI (some even DivX) formats.
If the source files are already in these formats, you can just copy & paste them AS IS on a recordable DVD. If you want to have professional-looking menus or interface in your disc, you'll need DVD AUTHORING software like DVDStyler or WinX which not only makes it possible to create DVDs, they are also capable of converting to and from popular video formats & burn them onto discs as standard DVD. There are TONS of authoring software like these except i opted to cite the above 2 as examples since they are free so you can try them out & see which one is more convenient to use per your preferences.
The dvd's are not spinning up correctly. If the belt inside is worn this will cause cd's to play but dvd's fail. open up and replce belt (small black rubber running on motor)
