What are the major n minor problems a 2000 chrsyler 300m have (178 thousand something miles already )
Tamika, there are many things to watch out for, but I would say the number ONE thing to watch out for (and have this fixed ASAP) is the TIMING BELT.
If this has not been done, then get it done as soon as possible. If this belt breaks, you can kiss the upper end of your engine good-bye -- and THAT's ALOT of money. Figure the cost of an engine is around 3 K right now PLUS someone has to put it in. I've done this, and while it is no picnic, it can be done, and it IS costly for parts. To prevent any catastrophe, change the timing belt, and while you are at it, the WATER PUMP too- it is only about 75 bucks by itself (PLUS Installation). Make sure the tensioner is good AND the idler pulley too. For about 300 dollars one can buy the entire front timing kit including the pump and be done with it.
The radiator should be pulled while it is out, because the Engine OIL circulates through it on the RIGHT side of the radiator, and the Transmission circulates through the LEFT side. Corrosion on the inner tanks can cause a totaled engine or transmission or both in about a mile once it springs an inner leak. Change the Trans oils and filter, but I DO NOT recommend you have it flushed. NOT GOOD in my book. Just have the oil changed and filter changed and be done with it. If you are not leaking anything, but using a tolerable amount of oil between changes, and it doesn't smoke like a chimney, then that's okay. Oil is cheap and on a high mileage engine you can expect some oil usage. There are other things to look at like brakes, tires and alignment, struts and other suspension things too, but these are the major things to consider. So get in, put her in gear and GO!
