My 2000 Saturn failed inspection, EGR valve.

Can a lay man do it and how will I know if it needs to be replaced?

I just had the same problem. Napa told me it cost about $80, and would take about 1/2 to fix.

I have the same car, but haven't had this problem (yet), I've had others (I believe it to be the infamous intake gasket fold), but this was on the list of things to check.

Yes, you can do this yourself. The EGR is on the driver side, mounted on the intake underneath the air intake line. You might just need to clean it up a little though with some carburetor cleaner, a toothbrush, and by using a torxx wrench to gently move the pintle up and down while turning it left to right. If it gets stuck when you move it (doesn't pop back down), then you definetly have been having trouble with it...just tap it on the side with a wrench and it'll pop out. Repeat until it moves easily.

To remove the EGR:
1. remove the air intake line by loosening the hose clamps on intake manifold and the air filter box. Also remove the other hose running from the valve cover to the air intake.
2. disconnect the electrical cable from the top by pulling the tab out and pulling the cable up
3. Use a 10 mm socket and and extension bar (at least 4") to loosen the two bolts holding the valve on.

It takes about 10 minutes, 20 max to do, and is far cheaper then spending $180 for a new valve!

what are the codes that made him think these two parts need replacing. The egr could cause a rough idle or stall, But it would need to be stuck open a little which may not set an egr code.

The crank sensor wouldnt cause a rough idle but the car could stall at times intermittantly.

What are you exact symptoms

buy a can of throttle body/carby cleaner take the air filter hose off the throttle body start the car and just keep spraying it in there and keep reving the engine as it will stall if you dont, that stuff will clean the inside of your engine real good plus its quicker and cheaper

2000 Saturn SL2 - replaced ignition then BCM failed. Related?

the problem is not the bcm. the passlock security sensor is in the cylinder and housing, if the cyl and or housing was replaced the system must be relearned. if you replace the bcm you still need to relearn the system or it still will not start.
