I found an online manual for the PCV 7744 and it is NOT upgradable to 1GB, only to two 256 MB sticks for a total of 512 MB RAM maximum. Here is the link, you will need to scroll down near the end to page 72 to get this information.

Sony specs say:
  • Maximum Memory: 1024MB
  • Slots: 2 (2 banks of 1)
  • Standard Memory: 512MB removable
the answer is no.

It is a very simple thing to upgrade your Ram which is a great idea since you have only 512 MB. I suggest you buy at least 1 GB or more if you can afford it. Go to the link I am posting and let them scan your computer. They will tell you exactly what you can install and the price. This is a reputable site I use all the time. Problem with Sony Vaio pcv-rx860 (screen goes black at startup)
I would suggest first to try to take one stick of memory out and try to boot up the pc. Sometimes, one or both of the memory sticks can go bad or the memory slot on the motherboard itself can go bad. If that is not the case I would then remove all of the usb connected to the computer and last i would test the power supply.
