Check CMOS battery(Coin shaped battery), it should show 2.5-3V, if not then replace and check, you can even try and test the mbd without the CMOS battery. Some mbd does not boot with a faulty CMOS battery.

Hi, according to your mobo manual it supports SATA1/SATA2 hard drives so it's recommended to update BIOS, the latest I found it has release date 2006-06-29, you can find it in the folllowing link: Support For K8MM MSI Global
When you power on does it beep once and then seem like it boots even though you can't see the screen? Does the caps lock light on the keyboard (if you have one) toggle on and off when you press the key?
Sorry, I can't find a color diagram. But check page 2 of the HP support manual, this shows all the jumpers and board connectors. You can download the manual from the link below:
Hello,
You need to right click on to my computer>Manage>choose disk management, you should format the new SATA HDD there.
If that will work for you that is good but if not, i thing you should updated the BIOS and you have to make sure that you get that update to MSI website. if you are not familiar w/ that asked some one who know how to flash BIOS. it is risky if you are not familiar doing BIOS update!!!
Plz check your motherboard is support new generation SATA speed. May be the MSI K8MM-V 'll not support 3gbps speed drives. So you need to change the HDD speed to 1.5Gbps by changing the jumper setting of HDD (plz refer HDD manual)
One thing you can do is to reset the bios setting by clearing the bios. You will need to revothe battery and remove the jumper CMOS battery cc1 .
Note the setting before removing.Usullay ithe default is pin one and pin two.
One oher thing that you can do is to update the bios version
This is sure it will correct the problem oc cd/dvd.
the manual for your motherboard can be downloaded here: http://www.msi.com/index.php?func=downloadfile&dno=3812&type=manual
On page 2-17, the pin-outs for those connectors are specified in detail. They are part of the JFP2 header: PIN SIGNAL DESCRIPTION 1 HD_LED_P Hard disk LED pull-up 2 FP PWR/SLP MSG LED pull-up 3 HD_LED_N Hard disk active LED 4 FP PWR/SLP MSG LED pull-up 5 RST_SW_N Reset Switch low reference pull-down to GND 6 PWR_SW_P Power Switch high reference pull-up 7 RST_SW_P Reset Switch high reference pull-up 8 PWR_SW_N Power Switch low reference pull-down to GND 9 RSVD_DNU Reserved. Do not use.
This is common to other mainboards, the SATA controller have it's own BIOS, but it only works correctly using two identical SATA HD's at same time for data protection purposes. If you have a free PCI slot there are expansion cards based on VIA chipset VT6421 with 2 internal SATA ports, other external and one IDE. See one here
