Windows Installer 3.1

I have downloaded this Installer from Microsoft site, and tried to install it, but when unzipping or decompressing the files, it stops and says " Extracting File : update\langspefific\enu\update.exe To Directory e:\c8de9dc067eba06fff With a pop-up window sayingk: The system cannot find the file specified. " Then I have to close. I also downloaded the Microsoft Visual Basic with this installer directly about 30 MBs which comes with the same Windows Installer 3.1, and here again, the auomatic install says, could Install Windows Installer, and Visual Basic Not attempted to install. Even Windows Automatic updates, downloads this installer, but when I say, Install the updates, the result is Windows installer NOT Installed. I tried to install Internet Explorer 7, here also it says Unable to find update/langspecific/enu/update.exe. I am really at a fix. Tried the net and mircosoft sites, who offered different tips, but nothing works. My present Windows Installer in my XP Pro 3.0.3790.2180. Nor can I upgrade Windows Media Player from 10 to 11 all because of this damn installer. Could someone, who may have faced a similar problem and solved it let me know how they went about this.

I have found a web site with a procedure to repair your Windows Installer... http://wiki.williams.edu/display/docs/Windows+XP+Repairing+Installer+Service Perhaps when this problem is fixed all the rest will fall into place.

    Thanks :)

I found torrent sites sometimes have far better copies and easier to download. One had all the updates and service packs built in which stopped update failures and weird system trouble through individual updates but thanks all the same.
