You seem to be confusing the power of the Receiver with the impedance. Watts is how much power or how loud it can go. While ohms is the impedance of the device. The receiver will have an lowest ohms setting for it's speakers. For example if it says 4 ohm you can connect any speaker of 4 ohms and above to it. However if it said 8 ohms then you should not connect any speaker lower than that.
Each channel will have it's own power level measured in Watts. Some units have the same level for all channels, others have different levels for the channels. You can connect any speaker that has a wattage greater than the channel's total max power. If you connect say a 50 watt speaker to a 70 watt amp, it will work, but you must never take the volume to even near the max or it will blow the speaker.
Anything with a mono soundtrack will only decode on the left and right channels. Unless the unit has something like an all channels setting. So the unit seems to be working fine. Mono films have no surround effects applied to them, so the indications are simply showing they are working. They of course feed no surround to other channels, as none are present.
There are non.... Virgin has nearly finished with the nagravision 3 rollout. If you have lost all the encrypted channels, thats it for now.
There are no codes, no fixes available yet.
I believe that the only box still working with alot of work is the Kryptview.
IF a work around is found, you may need a next gen box with internet access.
SO.. all starview / eurovox / digivox cable receivers are now only good for receiving some free to air programs, and will probably NEVER get a fix
There are non, the codes have not changed. Virgin has now switched to nagravision 3 encryption. All eurovox/starview boxes can now only receive SOME free to air programs. If you rescan, all the programs are picked up, but all the encrypted channels are blocked. There is no fix yet, and there will probably be NO fix for your box, or any box without an ethernet connection. Check afterdawn.com or techkings for more info
Your not going to get codes for NTL/Virgin now as they are using Nagravision3 security encryption which hasn't been hack yet. If it has its not in the public domain yet.
What you will need is a Magic Card and a programmer to use it.
Because the the super box a standalone receiver Virgin may send you just a card to use in the box but you have to pay for it.
Sounds like you are trying to receive the new Over The Air OTA, digital ATSC signals on a VCR that can only receive analog NTSC, which are not sent by any but low-power channels. Did you miss the change over last April, postponed from Feb, and featured on every TV channel when you could have obtained 1 or 2 $40 coupons toward ATSC-to-NTSC converter boxes. Try www.dtv.gov for more info, IIRC.
If you are speaking of cable TV then see your company. These may be digital Quadrature Amplitude Modulation QAM signals that only certain TVs can decode provided they are not encrypted. Locals are never encrypted. This is separate from the ATSC conversion.

1. Press menu then Factory Setting & Enter code 0000 to reset.
2. Exit to main menu & enter 1570 to get into the CASS SYSTEM & turn EMU on
3. Reinstall channels (Goto Installation, Cable network (try TW first & if no channels try NTL then C & W and so on - I'm with Virgin & used the setings for TW) & Voila ;o)
Nb: You may have to redownload channels so reconnect yr box to the computer & follow the link below

Sorry for the late response.
I'm afraid that there aren't any known upgrades to decode kryptoworks encryption, besides this STB has only 1Meg flash memory and can only be use to receive FTA signals.
