I powered down this laptop properly the other night. When I got up the next morning and tried to start it I wouldn't go past the XP loading screen. It gets to the XP loading screen, sits there for a couple of seconds, flashes a blue screen with a giant error message and then reboots and repeats the process until you shut it off. The error screen is up for less than a second, so it's impossible to read. I have tried reseating the ram. And checked the bios settings. But that didn't work. Any suggestions?

Hold down keys 6, 7 and Y as it boots - press quite hard. Basically, the graphics card is running too hot, and has become unsettled in the motherboard. it resides underneath the above keys, so when you hold them down on bootup, it makes the connection better. I've been doing this for about 2 years, on a 5 year old x1000 I bought when I lived in Taiwan.
Sounds crazy - because it is...

You should definately be given the choice to boot from cd, when you press F2 to get into the bios and go to boot options, what boot options do you have?
If you go into the bios you should have the choice to boot from ide (hard drive), cdrom, floppy disk, network (on some) and try other boot media.
Are you going into the boot option in the bios by pressing F2.

does it run with the power cord plugged in? if so your batterys dead, otherwise harddrive/bios/motherboard fault? is your power supply charging the battery?
SOURCE: I have a compaq presario x1000 that wont let me
It is likely that the hard drive is bad or a memory issue. I would start by removing the hard drive and see if it goes past the compaq screen. If it does then you know what is wrong. If not message me and will walk you through the next step
