Master keys My daughter has a 1992 Mercury Sable that came with only one key. The Key has broken off in the ignition. The car still turns off and on but if we are able to get the bottom half of the key out of the ignition, we will need another key and don't know if we can get one cut because the key is in two pieces. What do you suggest?

A good locksmith should be able to duplicate the key. They will need to put it in a vise and mark the new key to cut it. Not just stick it in an automatic machine like at a hardware store.

SOURCE: My daughter broke off a

Here is a crazy possibility, but I have done this with a tiny screw dropped into a ford ignition (They use the same barrel).

First, find a bit of pipe that will fit into the barrel. The ink tube of a biro washed out might do, but it may be a bit small. I did it with a cut off car aerial being used as the tube. You might find that an automotive dealer can supply you with some kind of fuel line, or better still, a garden machinery shop that will sell you fuel line for a mower that might do. Anyway.... Find a tube, it will need to be a couple of inches longer than your key at a minimum.

Now, go get your cylinder vaccuum cleaner (or an upright with a hose connection, whatever)

Duct tape over the end of the vaccuum cleaner hose, then poke a hole in the tape for the small pipe to fit in. Now, duct tape around it to make a seal.

start the cleaner and slowly insert the tube into the lock cylinder, gently wiggling it about.

You see where this is going I hope. Say a little prayer. Good luck!

SOURCE: MY KEY DON'T TURN THE IGNITION, IS LOCK

The solution may be just to grab the steering wheel and turn to left or right, some slight resistance may be felt as you turn, and at the same time try to turn the key in the ignition.

Seeking a solution for 2000 mercury sable 3.0 without ignition key

If you have lost the keys to your 2000 Mercury Sable 3.0, here are some possible solutions:

Retrieve the master key code: The master key code is usually found in the owner's manual or on a separate card that came with the vehicle when it was new. If you cannot find the master key code, you may be able to obtain it from a Mercury dealership by providing the vehicle identification number (VIN).

Program a new key: To program a new key, you will need at least one working key to use as a reference. If you do not have a working key, you may need to have a locksmith or Mercury dealership program the new key for you.

Replace the ignition switch and steering column lock cylinder: If you are unable to retrieve the master key code or program a new key, you may need to replace the ignition switch and steering column lock cylinder. This can be a more expensive option, but it will allow you to start the vehicle with a new set of keys.

It is recommended to consult a professional mechanic or locksmith for assistance with any of these options to ensure that the repairs are done correctly and safely.

My ignition key does not unlock the doors on my 2002 mercury sable is there a key for the doors and where would i get them

It's the same key, you have to slightly and gently push down as your turning the key. I have a 01 Taurus SES. They are basically the same car. This is also part of the anti theft system. If you haven't used the key much (using the remote mostly) it may be a little stiff. You can try the other front door.

My brother told me to go onto the Internet to find out how to remove the ignition key on his 1997 Mercury Sable. He didn't say ignition switch just ignition key. Is that the same and how does he go about...

The key is what goes into the switch. So the key is stuck in the switch? try pushing in the key while turning the switch back to get it fully to the off position so you can remove the key.
Or there might be a button lock near the switch you might have to press to remove the key.
Worst case the key and switch are broken and jammed. If that is what happened, or your brother is acutally talking about the switch, to remove and install a new switch youll have to take it to a shop

On-Board Programming Method "B" for Ford keys (1996 -early 1998 Ford, Lincoln, Mercury)
If you want to initiate a new master key.... 1. Insert new key into ignition cylinder and turn it to the ON (RUN) position. The security light on the dash will flash for fifteen minutes.
2. When the security light stops flashing, you have FIVE minutes to start the next step. Turn the ignition cylinder OFF and then back to the ON (RUN) position. The security light on the dash will flash for fifteen more minutes.
3. When the security light stops flashing, you have FIVE minutes to start the next step. Turn the ignition cylinder to OFF and then back ON (RUN) position. The dash will flash for fifteen more minutes.
4. After the security light stops flashing the third time, the new key has been programmed into the vehicles computer and will operate the car. It has replaced ALL the previous electronic key codes and is the ONLY key programmed into the vehicles computer.
If you want to add a key.... 1. Insert an existing key into the ignition cylinder.
2. Turn the ignition cylinder to ON (RUN) and back to OFF.
3. Remove the existing key and, within 15 seconds, insert the new key and turn it to ON (RUN).
4. The security light will light up for two seconds to indicate success in programming the key into the vehicle.
5. Don't attempt to start the vehicle with any key for at least 1 minute.
On-Board Programming Method "C" for Ford keys (Later 1998-newer Ford, Lincoln, Mercury)
If you want to initiate a new master key.... 1. This requires that the vehicle be connected to special dealer equipment. There are two ten minute delays involved while this device erases all existing key programming and sets up the vehicle computer to accept new key codes. Two new keys should be ready because the system requires a minimum of two keys in the program. After the first two keys are programmed, additional keys can be entered individually by following the instructions for adding duplicate keys (below).
If you want to add a key.... **You must have two original keys to perform this procedure. If you only have one key, you WILL have to take it to the dealer to get it programmed**
1. Insert and existing (working) key into the ignition cylinder.
2. Turn the ignition cylinder ON (RUN) and back to OFF. Ignition should stay on for at least ONE SECOND.
3. Remove the existing key and, within TEN seconds, insert a second working key and turn it to ON (RUN) and the back OFF. Ignition must be in ON for at least ONE second, but no more than TEN seconds. Remove the key.
4. Insert the new key before TWENTY seconds have elapsed and turn it to ON (RUN). Leave it the ON position for at least ONE second and turn back to OFF.
5. The security light will light up for THREE seconds to indicate that the new key has been successfully programmed.
6. To program additional keys, repeat steps 1 through 5
As a precautionary measure for all of the above procedures, you should wait at least one minute after you have performed this until you start your vehicle.
