GE Spacemaker JVM1640SJ Exhaust Fan Whines & Doesn't Do a Good Job

We have this GE Spacemaker above our range. Everything works with it: microwave, lights, etc BUT when we cook anything that has grease, the fan doesn't do anything to grab the smoke. So the whole kitchen and house smells like the meal. Its really annoying. When we do use the fan, its has this loud whiny noise, so combine that with not working, we just dont even use it. We long removed the black plastic grill at the top so we can stick our hand back there and see whats going on. We did find that if we propped a folded piece of paper next to what I think is the fan or the housing, it would reduce the sound a lot. But that falls out all the time. This is my first house and want to know these 2 questions: 1) shouldn't a properly working exhaust fan capture all the smoke from the range and keep a comfortable space in the kitchen (or is this the wrong solution) and 2) how do I fix this (part, removable, etc). I'm fairly handy with tools and enjoy learning how to fix things but wondering if this is even the best solution, dont want to have smoke smell permeate around the house any more. Thanks

The vent fan assembly's blade assembly may be freewheeling on the motor shaft (which can be fixed with a couple of drops of super glue or epoxy) or there may be a foreign object or critter in the fan blades.

You will have to remove the oven from the wall to inspect and remove and inspect the vent motor. You can download the installation instructions here.

At my Web site, you can get details, plus I have a video available showing how to remove a typical over the range control panel assembly in under 5 minutes.

You can order any needed GE parts from the Pros here, my favorite affiliated supplier.

For more free DIY and other help & advice, feel free to contact me via my site.

Please include FULL model number*, FCC ID number*, + detailed symptom information. ( * on the tag in cooking cavity or around door frame or control frame or on back)

SOURCE: I Have a GE Spacemaker

HELLO.

Since there is an amount of volts from the outlet, the fault is from the microwave breaker.

The solution is given below.

Reset the microwave breaker.

Take the back cover of the microwave off with a screwdriver.

Inside you will find a motor.

Most microwave motors have a small red reset button on them. Hit that button.

Your microwave should work again if the breaker was the issue.

Thanks

I have a ge above range spacemaker xl1800 it seems to work fine except their is a rattling noise when its running it sounds like a bad fan or something comeing loose it seems like its comeing from under...

The noise you are hearing is due to the fan. The fan is used to cool the magnetron during cooking, and because this fan is not working the magnetron is overheating and the thermal protector is opening, killing power to the unit. All you need to fix this is a new fan blade. The fan blade(look for part #80) is slipping on the motor shaft ( the noise you are hearing).

GE XL 1800

If the blade is broken then you can buy a new one from---

GE FAN BLADE

Please ask for further clarifications.

A Fixya rating would be appreciated if you find it useful.

Fan, turntable, light only work after being temporarily unplugged

We see (and repair) this a lot. The problem is on the control panel, which we regularly repair nationwide by mail for $39.95 postpaid in about a week.

At our Web site, you can get details of our service, plus we have a video available showing how to remove a typical over the range control panel assembly in under 5 minutes.

This light failure often occurs when a bulb goes out and the filament shorts, or when the bulbs are removed or installed without first unplugging the oven from the power line. Either can cause such a failure on the controller.

Sometimes this will also affect the exhaust fan operation, too. The lights and fan can be inoperable or stuck on too.

Feel free to contact me directly (and please remind me of your full model number) for more information & help.

We're happy to help you with free advice and we'd appreciate your thoughtful rating of our answer.

Ge Spacemaker fan won't turn off

The fan may need to be replaced, and or the drive circuit to the fan has a fault condition.
