Closed captioning I have closed captioning on the tv display but when I put in a DVD with close captioning, I cannot get the writing on the screen. I know that there is closed captioning on the DVD because I put it in another player and it worked. The owner's manual only seems to have directions for captioning for the tv and vcr. Is it possible that the DVD player doesn't support closed captioning?!

I had the same problem. My DVD player was connected to my HD TV via a HDMI cable as was recommended by the DVD owner's manual. I removed the HDMI cable and attached the three video component cables. Bingo, closed caption crossed immediately.

Trying to put on closed caption on gateway tv 42 inch-a large black screen appears

don't know if CC can be used when watching a DVD. seems to me that it would cause a conflict on the display where the dvd is sending the image which is really not part of the TVs input control options.
CC is usually related to the digital signal from signal broadcasts and not video images coming from an external source. if it was controlled i would think it would be from the dvd remote controller. not the tv.

I have a42PX75U Panasonic TV. Lately when I try to put a DVD or VCR tape I get a large black rectangular box that I can't keep off the screen. Any Suggestions?

ONE: Just unplug the power cord for 20 minutes, then power it back up.

TWO: Then, after the reset in ONE go into the on-screen-display area (or on the remote control for some sets) and disable the closed captioning.

That should clear it up.

Cannot turn CC off.

Features preferences
Caption service
This allows you to select the Closed Captions service levels of analog
broadcasting to be displayed.
Closed Captioning allows you to read the voice content of television
programs on the TV screen. Designed to help the hearing impaired, this
feature uses on-screen ‘text boxes’ to show dialogue and conversations
while the TV program is in progress. Captions will appear on the screen
during captioned broadcasts.
& Select Captions service.
é Press the cursor right.
“ Select the desired Caption service:
• CC 1, 2, 3 or 4
Dialogue (and descriptions) for the action on the captioned TV program
shows on screen.
Usually CC 1 is the most used. CC 2 may be used for alternate languages
if they are being transmitted.
• T 1, 2, 3 or 4
Often used for channel guide, schedules, bulletin board information for
Closed Captions programs, news, weather informations or stock market
reports.
Not all Caption services are necessarily being used by a TV channel during
the transmission of a Closed Caption program.

Features menu
& Select Features in the TV Settings menu.
é Press the cursor right to enter the Features menu.
“ Select the menu items with the cursor up/down and adjust the settings
with the cursor left/right.
Closed captions
This displays the transmitted CC- or CS-text on the screen according to
your chosen CC or CS service in the Setup, Features preferences menu,
This text can either be permanently displayed (assuming that the
service is available in the broadcast) or only when mute is active.
& Press the cursor right after having selected Closed captions.
é Select On, Off or On during mute.

Recording with closed caption

Carl,
Better late than.. I think that the Polo can record the encoded closed captioning onto the HDD, but you have to have a CC equipped television to display the captioning.
The newer Magnavox and Philips recorders sold at Walmart record the captioning, and have the capability to display it even on sets without the built in CC decoder depending upon your recording settings. If you get a digital converter box and connect that as the source to your Polo, you can record CC displayed on the screen if you want.

Tv PROBLEM

The black box your are seeing on the screen is the box to display text. It is listed under your "cc" closed captioning setting as T1, T2 etc. Go into your closed captioning and shut off the text. You can still leave closed captioning on or off. The text system was never really used but they put it on all of the TV's.

Closed caption

Closed caption wont turn off was solved by Bresnan tech. He told me the only way was to push the power button on my remote & then push the menu button right away & it would bring up a white screen & cc would be on it. I could't get it to work so I pushed the power button on my remote & the menu button on my motorola cable box & up came the screen & closed caption was on it. I disabled it & it took off the closed caption. Hope this helps
