This tv is getting a bit long in the tooth and I have repaired a dry solder joint once before. Syptoms: Initially the picture had white lines across the top 3 inches, sort of looked 'interlaced' with the picture. Now the unit starts with a black screen with some very dim light areas at the top then switches to 'standby' mode. There is the sound of the tv program during the 5 seconds before standby. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
When you see white lines at the top of the screen, it means that the pump-up capacitor next to the vertical output IC is bad and the IC is about to quit. When the output finally quits, you get a black screen with possible dim spots. The vertical output IC and its pump-up cap will have to be replaced, and the little fuse resistors next to the flyback in the + and - supplies to the vertical output IC must be checked too. If you have experience working on TV's then you can do it yourself, but if not then have the set serviced by a tech experienced in Sony sets.
