Red light is on when ac is on what does this red light indicate?

The battery is finito, dead replace it.

If the AC POWER LED is flashing, it indicates "excessive battery drain". According to the manual, the fix is to "stop the pump" and "allow the battery to charge." If BOTH the AC power LED AND the CHARGING MODE are flashing, it indicates that the unit failed pre-qualification test #1. The fix is to replace the battery. That would be my guess as well, the battery needs replacing. BTW, I wasn't able to find a manual for the A-5500, but I did find a manual for the A-5200. RED AND GREEN LED INDICATORS This smoke alarm features separate red and green LED indicators. The LEDs indicate the following: GREEN LED CONSTANT ON - AC power is present. OFF - AC power is not present. RED LED - Can be seen through the Push-to-Test button. Blinks once a minute - Indicating presence of a working battery. Blinks once a second - Smoke alarm senses smoke and simultaneously sounds an audible alarm. Blinks once every 10 seconds - Smoke alarm is quieting an unwanted alarm (Model ADC only). (Interconnected system only): OFF - Another smoke alarm in the network has sensed smoke and is signalling this alarm.

Is red light on for overload or for battery?
If on overload, try reducing the load on the UPS. If red light on overload persists buy a new UPS (overload fault hard to repair).

Red light on battery - replace the batteries.

Red light on boost or buck, may mean that the nominal voltage of ups and the limits need to be changed/corrected.

The Brookstone manual claims it will fully charge after 3-5 hours, but it takes much longer then that. Mine does not indicate green light, but it seems it stops blinking red when its fully charged. After that it run on power directly from the ac-adapter.

If you keep it connected to the AC-adapter after it have stopped blinking red (do not disconnect it at all), it will start to run on the adapter and will not turn off. You will feel the AC-adapter gets hot while its running, something it does not while regular charging.

If it still dont stop blinking red after having it connected to power for 3 days, your AC-adapter is probably faulty. This happened to me, and after allot of research I found this replacement from a US seller on ebay (only five dollars included shipping).

Good luck with your projector. It a really cool little thing, but it has some design flaws.

Sounds like the battery could be faulty.
The diagnostic procedures from the Dell User Guide are as follows:

Total Power Failure When Using a Battery
If an AC adapter is not connected to your computer, the computer's power source
is a battery. If the battery indicator flashes amber or is a steady amber, the
battery needs to be charged. If the battery is flashing green and amber, the
battery may be defective. To troubleshoot this problem, use the following
procedure.
1. Turn off the computer and peripherals, and disconnect them from AC power.
2. Reseat each installed battery by removing it and then replacing it.
3. Turn on the computer. Does the green power indicator light up?
Allow one minute for the computer to initialize its components before checking
for signs of power.
Yes. Continue to step 4.
No. Use the AC adapter to connect your computer to AC power. If the computer
operates normally when using AC power, go to step 7. If the computer does not
boot when using the AC adapter, see the previous subsection, "Total Power
Failure When Using the AC Adapter."
4. Does the battery indicator flash amber or show a a steady amber light?
Yes. The battery needs to be charged. Go step 5.
No. Go to step 7.
5. Connect the computer to AC power, and fully charge the battery.

6. As the battery charges, does the green battery indicator light up?
Yes. Go to step 9.
No. Go to step 7.
7. Is the battery indicator flashing green and amber?
Yes. Your computer may be in a hot environment. Charging the battery in this
condition may affect the life span of the battery. Continue to step 8.
No. The problem is resolved.
8. Disconnect the computer from AC power. Is the the battery indicator still
flashing amber?
Yes. You may have a defective battery. Continue to step 9.
No. The problem is resolved.
9. Remove the battery, and press its test button. Is the uppermost indicator in
the charge gauge of the battery flashing?
Yes. You have a defective battery. Continue to step 9.
No. The problem is resolved.
10. If a spare battery is available, fully charge it, and then install it in the
computer.
11. Turn on the computer. Is the power indicator off?
Yes. Your original battery is defective.

The red Battery Status LED indicator will flash, indicating a proper connection has been made and the unit is charging.
