Oval Dutch ovens are customarily larger. The shape is designed to fit across a grill, griddle, or two burners. A large round pot might hang too much over the heat source, causing foods in the middle to cook more.

The best kind of Dutch oven to invest in is one that is round and wide. It should have sides that are more straight than sloped. This is in order to have a lot of room for searing/browning. The oven should be 4 " deep.
Oval dutch ovens will cause the food at the ends of the oval to cook unevenly when searing. An oval oven is good for pot roasts and whole poultry.

How to fix enamel chips on bottom of Dutch pot

Hello, John -

You do not state if the chipped enamel is on the interior bottom or the exterior bottom of the Dutch oven.

Read the comments about chipped enamel on a Dutch oven here:
https://www.chowhound.com/post/repairing-surfacing-enamel-coated-cast-iron-766196?page=2

I have found advice stating an enamel chip can be repaired by using a food grade enamel repair kit. However, all the information I have found indicates that a "food grade enamel repair kit" cannot be found for purchase. Sigh . . .

If your Dutch oven is a Martha Steward brand, read this:
https://simpledailyrecipes.com/11956/what-to-do-when-your-martha-stewart-enamel-cast-iron-dutch-oven-is-chipped/

If your Dutch oven is a Le Creuset and is cast iron with an enamel coating, it may have a lifetime warranty, if you are the original owner. Read the warranty details here:
https://www.lecreuset.com/warranty#ci-warrantytime
Choose "Cast Iron" and "Submit a Warranty Claim".

Best wishes.

In cooking a dutch oven is the original slow cooker. Usually made from cast iron, and can be used on top of a wood burning stove, in a wood burning fireplace, over a campfire, or with coal/charcoal. Some have domed lids, while others have a flat lid with a raised edge (aka flagged lid) which is idea for holding charcoal above the kettle. This allows for heat both above and below the dutch oven. These are generally available in stores such as Cabela's, BassPro and others.

Is there another name for a dutch oven?

Sometimes dutch oven are called slow cookers. They both have the ceramic pot but slow cookers tend to be electric, not for use on the stove or in the oven.
