When a photo is printed the tops are all smudged, ive tried cleaning both manually inside the printer and using head clean but no luck - any ideas? cheers
Try to recalibrate the printer, it is provided with the installation CD came with it. OR you can also try to look for recalibration in the control panel printers. Make sure that your cartridges are not short of ink. Sometimes there is an option of alignment. These things should help you out.

Inkjet printers need to be used frequently to prevent inkdrying out in the print head nozzles. If the print head cleaning maintenance routine does not clear the blockages, then print head needs replacing, but it may be expensive. It may be more cost effective to buy a later model and better printer thanreplace the print head.
How long was the printer stored before you took it out to use it? You can't store a printer with or without ink cartridges in it. When a printer sits, the ink that is in the print heads settles and dries. Once that happens, the print heads are pretty much ruined. You can buy new print heads, but its usually cheaper to buy another printer instead. The reason it is not printing is probably because the print heads are plugged.

Hi there maximum time we found it is a the head problem. The print head is what the cartridges sit in inside of the printer. For resolve the problem please follow these.
Open the printer and wait for the carriage to slide over. Some how if its not come then Unplug the printer & Manually slide the carriage.
Now Remove the ink cartridges from the print head & Use wet warm cotton swab or use alcohol to thoroughly clean the print head.
Repeat this until there is no ink residue coming off on the cotton swab. After finished it make the head dry then fix it back. Now Try to print something now
If that does not work then follow the next step.
Remove the printer data cable & restart the PC & printer. Then fit back the data cable & turn on the printer. Hope that's start working , if no luck then Uninstall the printer driver & restart the PC & Printer both again. Now install the driver of the printer and connect it with PC ,Turn on printer & go for a test print from the printer preference. Thanks & waiting for your reply.
try to reinstall the printer driver software. you can download the printer driver software from your printer manufacturer's web site then restart the computer and printer.
The R2400 has an option to load paper on-top (Epson calls it the Automatic Document Feeder) and at the back. Based on the printer's User Guide the Velvet Fineart Paper should be loaded at the back. (Epson called is the Manual Single Sheet Feed).
Look at the User's Guide availabe on their website.
I thru out an epson ink jet and never bought one again. I did not use it that much and the ink dried in the head and it would not clear out.
I toke it apart and soaked it is almost all the solvents from dish detergent lye for denatured alcohol to napa tested it each time and nota so save the frustration buy a new head or a printer instead. where anytime you place new ink the heads are changed too.
Did you try cleaning the decoder strip? It is located behind the print head, looks like the tape inside a cassette tape. If it has ink splatter or a smudge on it carefully wipe it down with a paper towel (damp). It may be easier to remove it, careful not to stretch the little spring on the left side.
Do a thorough manual cleaning of printerheads (where the cartridges sit). Many printers are notorious for clogged nozzles and the ink dries on he prinheads until it becomes a bandind issue or ladders appear, smudges too. Use a proper cleaning solution and cotton buds, until most colour is gone off cotton buds. Reinsert cartridges and try again.
