Collet The collet will not come out even though the collet nut has been removed. Collet stuck. Can't remove or get it to expand

SOURCE: The router bits will not fit in the collet.

The collet is loosely screwed on, correct?
Is it close, or 1/4" off. You may need an adapter for different sized bits.
I have noticed, particularly with Freud bits, that they seem a bit oversized. Try putting the bit in the collet before you insert the collet into the router.
If you're very careful, you can use fine emory cloth (like 400 grit or higher) to polish the bit by cutting a long strip and clamping the bit in a vice, then gently polish the shank a little to allow it to fit into the collet. Pull back and forth on the ends of the sandpaper like you were buffing shoes, but I would only recommend this if you can use a micrometer to check the shank and it is in fact oversize.
You could create a dangerous situation if you polish too much and the bit is not held securely in the collet and flies out when the router is under load.
Another technique is to sand a slight chamfer on the end of the bit to help it slide into the collet.
Or return it and try another brand.

a new collet won't hurt, but you may try sanding down the inside of your existing collet with 120 - 180 grit sandpaper. also, buff down the router bits

any condensation or moisture that may have gotten on these items can cause almost invisible oxidation that you can remove easily by sanding. DO NOT USE WD40!!!

Collet stuck in shaft.
On some models the collet stays put on purpose. You don't have to remove the nut either. But if you really do have to remove the collet and it is the type that is supposed to come out (maybe you need to use the 1/4 inch collet) then just stick a bit into it without the nut and give the bit a sideways whack with a piece of wood. If the collet has been pressed in tight by the nut without a bit in place, then you won't be able to fit a bit into it, and maybe the collet is ruined. Find the largest diameter shaft you can to fit into the hole and pop that sideways. Good luck.

Undo the collet nut then find something that you can get a firm grip on the old collet and pull it out. If this doesn't work and it is still stuck carefully try an eze- out to remove the old collet. Once you have removed the old collet just insert the new one and replace the nut.

Bit wont tighten down in collet
Get a new collet and nut the 1/2" collet is crappy, it is too thin and pushes out of the nut easily.

You may also make sure that the collet did not seperate from the nut. remove the nut completely and if the collet is not attached, remove the collet from the spindle, insert inthe nut and then insert the bit through the collet while holding it and then put the hole thing back on the spindle (mtor shaft) and tighten it.

Router bits
Mike, The fit is just a little more snug than you expect. The collet is springy, and will expand to fit your bits, even if they were oversize (which is very unlikely). Put on a leather glove and just push the shank of the bit into the collet. Do not try to file down the shank of your router bits, you will only make them run eccentric. You don't need to remove the collet. Just loosen the locking nut about a half turn after it is easy to turn. Good luck. Thanks for using FixYa. Al Kupchella

I have a Dewalt dw600 and the drill bit broke off, just the main cutting bit, and I cannot remove the bit- I try to unlock but it won't come off.
DW660 is suppose to be a tool free bit insertion and removal. However a wrench may be necessary. If you have loosened the the collet nut either with the collet grip or a wrench and the bit does not come out. Remove the collet nut completely from the tool. Remove the the collet with the bit in it. With a couple of plyers, one use to hold the broken bit the other to twist the collet. Sometimes when the bit is overtighten the collet locks on to the bit so to speak and the collet wont expand back out thus releasing the bit by doing the above it will expand back out and release the bit. Reinstall the collet and collet nut.

My Dremel lock nut won't budge. My collet is stuck! How can I loosen the bit?
You'll need to use either the built in shaft lock to hold the collet in a fixed position, or use a pair of slip joint pliers to hold the shaft of the bit, while you use the wrench to loosen the collet. Slow and steady should get it loose. Another option is use some penetrating oil sprayed lightly onto the back of the collet to help loosen it from the shaft etc.

My collet nut is stuck and I cannot remove it. Is there a trick to removing a stuck collet nut?
remove all the star head screws, unscrew the top plastic collet holding the plastic outer casing on. take a pair of vise grip locking pliers open the plastic casing just enough to expose the inner shaft inside the casing lock the vice grips onto the metal shaft between the bearing casing and the collet that is stuck enough to hold but not to dent it up. now that the vice grips are locked onto the main shaft get an adjustable wrench and size it to the collet screw size and turn it should come off rather easily or at least mine did just did it as i wrote this then screw the casing back together and happy dremeling hope this helps
