B&S will not start

I have a B&S model 31Q777. Engine will turn over but will not start. I've checked spark at the plug (good), Put in fresh fuel, checked fuel system, cleaned carb very good, checked woodruff key on flywheel, checked valve clearance, checked push rods, done compression check (90 PSI). I'm the third mechanic in this shop to work on this mower and i would love to be the one to fix it.

If the engine compression is too low, it will have problems starting or not start at all, and these seem to be the symptoms you are describing. An easy test is to pour some oil into the cylinder and see if that increases the compression. If this makes a difference, you will need to replace the piston rings and at least hone the cylinder, depending on the wear in the cylinder bore.
You can also try spraying some easy start into the intake and seeing if that makes the machine run for just a short spurt. If it does, you could have a problem with the carb not supplying fuel due to something like a blocked jet or irt in passages etc.

SOURCE: Cleaned the Briggs & Stratton Riding Lawn

kehmahcliff:
It looks like that your valves need to be maintenanced. This can be done by small engine repair shops. They should have the proper tools.

Also the "timing" of the spark and the fuel injection could be a problem. I hope this helped you.

SOURCE: AH520 Tecumseh engine will not start; no spark to

I would recommend a serious carburetor cleaning or even installing a new rebuild kit after the machine setting up for so long. The spark problem must be checked for either the (magneto to flywheel air gap) or the condition of the electrical points and condensor on it (if this older model has them)

25 cc weedeater..new carb, new ring and piston, new gaskets, good compression..won't start. when removing plug and looking into cylinder after priming and attempting to start there doesn't appear to have...

Check you have a spark, connect a spare plug and hold it to an earth, crank the engine and watch for a spark. If not check your ignition circuit. If a good strong spark proceed:
Check fuel supply to carburettor - make sure there are no transit plugs that have not been removed. Easiest way is to disconnect the supply hose - no naked lights!!!!
If that\'s OK remove the carburettor float chamber and check that fuel is reaching the carburettor. If the float chamber is dry, check the float valve assembly. There\'s not usually much to small engine carburettors so if the fuels getting to the carb it may be a blocked jet or just very badly adjusted. There is also the possibility that the carb is faulty (yes I know it\'s new but ...!).
If fuel and spark is OK then it could be the spark timing - it should be OK unless you\'ve stripped the engine. On some engine\'s it is possible to set the spark 180 degrees out so that it sparks on the exhaust stroke - just to confuse things some engines spark on both exhaust & compression.
Good Luck!

95 Park Avenue Ultra dies for no reason I can find, I've replaced the crank sensor, cam ssensor, spark module, fuel filter, I've had the injectors tested, fuel pump tested, plugs & wires t

As you have probably figured out by now, you will have to treat it as a no start and troubleshoot it when it fails to start. Until you figure out if you are loosing spark or fuel to the injectors when the engine dies you have no direction to go in.

I found my problem to be the ht pack. After washing and driving on very wet roads, once the ht pack dried out it worked fine again. Remove the ht pack and close the plug connection and give it a good coating of plasticote70 from crc. this should be available at most electronic suppliers.

I have a 17 hsp 4 cycle engine..model number OV49OEA... I've replaced the spark plug, fuel pump, and it just will not start...any ideas?

This might sound odd but if you remove all gasoline and I mean all of it, use a syringe or baster if need be, then replace all gas with fresh it may do the trick. Also, you didn't mention if you checked your oil? You should change your oil, and be sure the oil stick level is correct also. Each spring you should change the oil, the spark plug, clean filter and use fresh gasoline, it will make all the diffference. Good luck!

How to start the snowblower yard machine when you've tried everything to start it up correctly and it doesn't start?

How did you store it? The gas should be drained out of the carburator and tank prior to storing. If you don't do that it starts varnishing the jets closed in the carburator. So to start it, try draining all the old gas out. Take the spark plug out and put the wire back on and lay it on top of the block. Crank the engine over turn switch on if it has one, does it have spark? If it does good. If not try a new plug, if it still does not have spark you will have to pull the flywheel to see what is wrong with the points or pickup. Once you have spark established, put new fuel in tank. Spray a little WD40 into spark plug hole. Put spark plug back in and go through normal starting procedures. Good luck.

I have a 1997 xl custom that will not hold a charge. will not start just turns over.

If the engine is turning over but won't start, your battery is fine. You've either got a fuel problem or an ignition problem Take the spark plugs out of the heads and put them back into the spark plug wires. Lay the plugs on the heads so that they are grounded against the engine. Turn the ignition switch on and press the start button. Watch the spark plugs to see if you have spark to the plugs. Don't get your face too close to the spark plug holes as a lot of air will blow out of them. If you do have spark, put the spark plugs back in the heads and take the air filter cover and element off of the carb. Look just inside the mouth of the carb and you'll see a brass nozzle standing up. With the engine OFF, crank the throttle grip to the wide open position. You should see a good stream of fuel squirt out of the nozzle into the carb. If not, there is no fuel in the carb. Pull the fuel line off the petcock. Turn the igniton switch on and spin the engine and watch for a good flow of fuel out of the petcock. If you don't have any fuel flowing out of the petcock, replace the petcock. You can either drain the fuel from the tank or take the tank off the bike to replace it.

Good Luck

Was riding bike and was stopped at a red light when it made a loud noise and died, now it won't start. The engine cranks and turns over but won't start.

You didn't say what year and model the bike was but on any four stroke engine, you must have three things for the engine to run. You need fuel, spark, and compression. The easy one to check is the fuel. Take your air filter off and make sure you're getting fuel to the engine. Then, check your spark. Pull the spark plug wires off the spark plugs in the head and insert another set of plugs in the wires. Ground the plugs against the engine, turn the ignition switch on and press the start button. Watch the plugs to see if you have spark. The next test is compression. With the engine cold, remove the spark plugs. If you have a compression gauge, connect it to one of the heads and spin the engine over with the starter. If you don't have a gauge, simply put your finger over the spark plug hole. Turn the throttle wide open and press the start button. You should show about a hundred pounds of compression if you have a gauge or the compression should blow your finger off the hole with a good deal of force if you're checking it that way. If you have all three of these and they're timed correctly, the engine should run. If the engine won't run, find out which of the three elements is missing and work from there.

Good Luck
Steve
