When i try to turn on my Toshiba laptop i get 0701 usb over current on hc/port error. I assume it is a bad USB port but how can I fix this please?
I had the same problem on a toshiba satellite u400.
Usb over current on port ... blabla..
Please press F1 to resume or F12 to install.
F1 just ended up in a screen asking to press F2 or F12 which did nothing.
F12 did nothing.
Rebooting the pc ended in a black screen with a flickering HD symbol.
To be able to boot again on the BIOS I had to remove the battery and disconnect the plug.
Once It restarted booting on the error USB over current.
Si I took a USB mouse and tried to boot with the mouse plugged in on port , then another ... at the third port the PC booted normally with no error :)
Don't have any idea why it became faulty but it's now solved for me.
This means that there is shortage in the USB port. Check your USB ports. Definately there is USB port pins attached
each other. Just open their contact. Or you have faulty USB device attached to laptop - remove it.
No just look from outside.
Nope.
If everything looks fine, then unfortunately it's a faulty motherboard.
Or if your laptop is out of warranty then try to reset CMOS battery:
1)Remove Laptop Battery
2)Take off Memory Cover(underneath - square cover, Sits
in middle of laptop 1 retaining screw
3)Using two thumbs spread spring clips to outside and
pull out RAM memory.
4)Remove clear vinyl label opposite RAM memory slots in
upper left corner( laptop battery slot is on right, DVD
drive is facing away from you)
5)Using a magnifying glass (unless you have perfect
vision)in the upper left corner you will see JOPEN1 with
a white silkscreen square next to it . Inside the square
you will see what looks like the letter T over a U.
Using a metal paper clip short the U to the Silver 1/4"
post connecting the motherboard to the laptop case(this
is you ground, it is located above what looks like a
silkscreen outline of a chip)hold for 25 -30 seconds.
6) Place back your RAM memory, put in the laptop battery
and test start laptop. you should see a selection of F1
or F2 for setup. Using the F2 gets you into the Bios
menu where you reset the time and date.

DO I have to open up the laptop to do this?
They all look fine. they all have 4 pins all lined up like normal. Could it be where they attach to the MB?
