I bought my PSP over a year ago. I recently tried to turn it on after not using it for over a month, but it wouldn\'t turn on. So I connect it to the power adapter and noticed that the LED was orange, which means it is in charging mode. There are no details in the battery information except for external power source. After I disconnecting it from the power adapter, my console automatically turns off. So I thought the battery went bad from not turning my console on for quite a long time. I bought a new battery and my console was working fine until after few weeks the exact problem occurred again. I can turn the console on while its connected to the power adapter, but it shuts off after I disconnect it. Please help.
Sounds like you might need a new power board. I know videogame911 does service PSP's your best bet might be to send it in to someone who can tell you exactly what the problem is, specially if you replaced the battery and still have the same issue.

Here's what you can do:
1. Connect your PSP to your PC.
2. Check if the proper folders are on it's Memory Stick. There is
a folder called PSP which had the following folders
underneath.
GAME
PICTURE
VIDEO
SYSTEM
3. The folder you need is GAME. Go in there and create a subfolder called UPDATE.
4. Go to www.playstation.com
5. Look for your local site.
6. Look in the PSP section for firmware updates. Here's the link for the most recent firmware update for the USA.

* If you need other regional firmware you'll need to look for it yourself or tell me where you from.
7. Download the file in the above link to a convenient place such as your desktop. Then copy it to the recently created UPDATE folder.
8. Safely disconnect your PSP.
9. Start up your PSP and go to the Game section of it, select Memory Stick. You should now see the file.
10. Open the file by pressing X. The update procedure starts. Be sure to follow the on screen instructions.

Warning: do not use firmware other then placed on Sony PlayStation's official site. For it might damage your system and it will never boot again. Also make sure the battery is fully charged (a charge of 50% will not do, the update utilty won't allow the update). Since it can take an few minutes you best connect it to it's power supply.
NEVER interupt an update by shutting your unit down, removing battery, removing stick, removing power. The damage done is not covered by Sony's warranty.
About the issue for the connection with your PS3 unit. It's true, you need one of the most recent firmwares.

It sounds like your PSP is "bricked". Have you upgraded the firmware or added custom firmware? If so, you'll need a Pandoras battery/memory card to repair. Try ebay for those.

If you know someone who has a USB data cable for PSP, please borrow and test it with your PSP. USB cables has 4 wires, 2 for power (+5V and GRD) and 2 for data (+ and -). With PSP, the power and data wires are separated and has different input on the PSP, if 1 of the data wires is damaged, it will look like the cable is ok but it couldn't transmit and receive data properly. In your case, I think your PSP is can transmit but couldn't receive a reply from your PC.
Let me know if the borrowed PSP USB cable don't work.
