I have a Speedstream 4200 ADSL for my internet connection. I have a spare Motorola SBG900 (no access to cable internet) and have just bought a laptop. I want to use the SBG900 as a router only, for the wireless technology, but can't find the bridging function. The laptop is connected to the SBG but can't connect to the internet, the desktop is on.
Thank you.

Sounds like your laptop is hit with spyware and or viruses. Try starting it in safe mode (F8) and seeing if you still have this problem. If it works in safe mode go to grisoft.com and download the antimalware free trial. Restart in normal mode and install and run the trial version.

Your modem needs to be rebooted in order for your router to pull an IP from the modem. To do this, look for a little hole in the back of your modem and use a pen to push the button. Wait for the reboot to finish and then try again in about 20 seconds.

Your wireless adapter may not support 11g Enhanced wireless, which was my issue. Check your settings @ 192.168.0.1 and try switching to 11b/11g Standard wireless.
To get there, go to 192.168.0.1, Click "Wireless" on the left side, then click "Network" on the top.
Also, set the router to channel 11 for best results. (In my case, usually channels 6-11 work best)

Setup your IP addresses correctly by checking available IP addies in router.
You will have to know your router addie and your available wireless addies (in router). For this you need to enter router configuration (read manual).
Open network properties, tcp/ip properties, check "use following ip addie and enter something like 192.168.1.5 depending on what your router is setup as available.
Enter same subnet as your router.
Enter DNS server addies from you ISP.

I had that long time ago. Now I do not broadcast ESSID and changed the channel to 11 (I also use Vonage and when the call was placed the wifi was dropped. No longer).
Changing the MTU to 1452 (on the gateway) helps with the connection. Just to make sure I assigned the first IP address a bit away from the starting point, .10 so that somebody around having the same would not confuse my settings.
