The button you push for sound, only works sometime. Can't figure out how to get the bottom off to check the switch.
There are 6 rubber foot pads that under each one is a screw. I had the same problem and we found out that there were screws under the rubber foot pads. Once we were done we glued the rubber foot pads back on the lionel lamp. (Lionel Train Desk Lamp)

From the impact of the train when it hit the ground, it has probably damaged the sound system beyond repair. There are multiple problems that could've occurred, such as the wires breaking/loosening, or the sound box could have broken. There isn't a realistic way to fix this, really.
Even though it may not have been your fault, you should try to prevent things like this from happening in the future.
As to the 042 switches, this is likely the same problem. You can order replacement switches online to test them and make sure for relatively cheap, however.
There is hope for you, however. Go to the link below to go to Lionel's customer service page. There, you can find replacement parts and service stations that can replace/repair your train for you, for a small price compared to the value of the train itself. Good luck getting it fixed!
