2004 Kia Rio Won't Start Clicking Noise Battery is GOOD

We were driving and stopped to make a turn the car died... then we tried to start it and it tried to turn over but didnt start.... then it just made a clicking noise when we tried to start it... So we thought it was the battery so we got a new one and still same thing loud CLICK noise when we turn it over... It doesnt make a draging sound when we try to start it just a loud click and then nothing... Lights are bright and all and we even had the new battery tested and it is GOOD! we were driving down the street and the car died. When tried to restart it we heard the big thunk that accompnies a starter problem. you know , the sound that makes you look at each other and say "uh oh. thats the starter" My rio has that little security thingie by the steering wheel, and we had problwms with it starting for about a week. We would keep turning the ignition key and eventually it would start. I thought the security thingie was not completing the circuit. Now this happens. I bought a new starter and my boyfriend and brother are trying to install it now. I will be surprised and dissapointed if it doesnt work. I'll try to give an update. GOd I need a new car!!!!!

My 2004 Kia Rio just started losing compression and died on me. I tried starting it and it only clicks. I checked the battery cables and they are not corroded and very tight. Could it be the battery or the alternator not charging the battery? there is no water in the oil and it's not the water pump.

The clicking sounds like starter to me. If the car is running you can remove the neg/black wire from battery and if the car shuts down the alternator is not putting out enough voltage. Usually that is the case with the alternator. I just changed the alternator in 2004 kia rio and the started is on the drivers side across from the alternator. I will tell you this about changing the alternator it was a first for me on a Kia but it was a pain to get it out of the car. I tried from the top side(did not want to mess up the a/c sys lines) so i removed from the underside.

You likely need a new alternator. I'm not going to be 100% positive but it sounds like the alternator is not kicking in and your starter may be okay. If the starter doesnt work try this next. It is pricy but should fix your problem. Good luck.

Sounds like you have a bad connection at the battery, wiggle the terminals they are very thin on that car. Check all your major grounds under the hood. All of that assuming the battery is in good condition

Sounds like a bad battery or alternator, or it could have thrown the drive belt off. Check too see that the belt is still on and then charge the battery and see if it starts. If it starts, run for a while and dies again with no crank, it is most likely an alternator.
