This dishwasher (I have it too) doesn't have a grinder, using a filter system instead (as you've found). I hate it and have found the only way to not have to keep taking it apart to clean out the food is to rinse before loading... i try to rinse away all chunks all the way down to anything big enough to get caught in the fine, inner filter (like pepper flakes).

Hello diane,

i would think that unless your model says it is self cleaning then yes it is normal to have to clean the filters on a dish washer. the amount of time between cleans would depend on how dirty your dishes are.

It sounds like your wash pump impeller might be clogged. The first symptom of this problem is poor cleaning capabilities and food left on dishes. You will need to remove the spray arm assembly to access the reservoir below the spray arm. More than likely, you will find debris clogging the the wash pump impeller area. As a general rule of thumb, you should not put anything into dishwasher that still has to be chewed. You don't have to prewash your dishes, just scrape them real well. Most detergents still need to oils and residue from food to activate the cleaning agents. If you prewash, you simply defeat this purpose. Some things that should NOT go into a dishwasher are lemon seeds, orange seeds, pistachio seeds, popcorn kernels, chunks of meat, bacon, tooth picks, chicken bones, match sticks, bottle cap liners, jar labels, etc. These are a small example of SOME of the things I have personally found in the wash pump. It doesn't take much to clog the pump, and the chopper assembly is not to be considered a disposal. I hope this helps you. Let me know if you need any further assistance.

Look at your manual, usually available on net for reading or downloading. Blink lights are often used to code out a problem with various combinations and repetition rates to indicate trouble code number for look-up in manual.

SOURCE: Water & soap was coming out of the dishwaster.

That sounds like the float switch is acting up. It is a mushroom looking device on the bottom that has a movable (up and down) plastic cup over the top. With the machine off, take the lower tray out and lift up on the cup--you should hear a faint 'click' when it nears the upper limit. It should also drop to the bottom when released. There may be food deposits that interfere with the proper movement of the cup. Are you using dish washer detergent only?

The inlet screen is at the bottom of the unit. Clean it out and re-try.

I've had the heater element replaced, but the water still is not getting hot.

If the heating element is fine then the problem is hard water. www.dishwasherfilter.com has a product to solve this problem once and for all. It filters the water going into your dishwasher and removes the hard minerals that leave those spots. It is very affordable and even has a money back guarantee. You will love the way your dishes look with this product.

Top shelf dishes aren't getting clean in my 5 year old Whirlpool dishwasher. Any suggestions?

Hello,

The most likely reason the dishes in the uppper rack of your dishawasher are not getting clean is because the filter on the pump is built up withe debris and the water is havinga tough time circulating through the pump. This tip i wrote will show ya how to clean that filter.

Hello

Water Inlet Valve

A dishwasher's water inlet valve is its most common part to fail. When your dishes are not being fully cleaned, quite often a faulty water inlet valve is to blame. Test your dishwasher's water inlet valve, and if it is no longer functioning as it should, you will have to replace it.

Upper or Lower Spray Arm

Your dishwasher has a lower spray arm. It may also have an upper spray arm at the top of the dishwasher. These spray arms are designed to shoot high pressure, high temperature water at your dishes. It is possible that the holes of the spray arms, where the water comes out, are blocked with debris, affecting wash quality. You should inspect your dishwasher's spray arms regularly. Clean out the spray arms as need be.

Heating Element

Water temperature is a key element in achieving clean dishes. A dishwasher's heating element is not designed to heat the water that enters it. Rather, the heating element is designed to maintain the heat of the water that enters the dishwasher. Its a good idea to run the hot water in your sink for a couple of minutes before you run the dishwasher. Just to make sure the water is nice and hot before it enters the dishwasher. If the water is unable to stay hot, it can adversely affect your dishwasher's cleaning ability.

Filter/Drain Grate

There is a filter in your dishwasher. Its function is to keep large particles of food and foreign objects away from the pump. Many of the newly-manufactured dishwashers have self-cleaning filters, and routine cleaning isn't a concern. However, some other dishw ashers need to have the filter removed and cleaned regularly. If the filter or grate is clogged or blocked with debris, it may interfere with the normal functioning of your dishwasher. Consult your owner's manual for specific directions for removing your dishwasher's filter and cleaning it.

Detergent or Detergent Cup

It could just be that you aren't using enough soap to completely wash your dishes. Your dishwasher may be designed to dispense soap at two different times during the wash cycle. If you don't fill all of the detergent cups, then the diswasher will lose a cleaning cycle. Also, if you use a gel-type detergent, try switching to a powered kind. Powders tend to dissolve better in hot water. And don't buy in bulk. Detergents are most effective in the first two weeks. After that, they decrease in potency.

Alternatively, your dishwasher's detergent cup could be defective in some way. It is possible that it is gunked up full of built up detergent, and a thorough cleaning may be enough to get it working again. If that doesn't do the trick, you probably need to replace the entire detergent cup assembly. If your cup isn't even opening, please see our section My dishwasher detergent cup won't open.

The filter is getting ice on it when I turn it on.

If you haven't already, clean the filter after it has thawed. In addition, the coils behind the filter may need cleaning.

Turn the unit OFF & Unplug it. Remove the filter and the upper half of the front of the cabinet. Clean the cools with warm water and dish washing liquid. Rinse with a damp sponge, dry the coils and apply a light coating of WD40. Reassemble the cabinet, plug the unit in, turn it back ON and take it for a test drive. Be sure to clean the filter at least once every 2 weeks.

Dishwasher does not clean dishes. Some soap remains in soap dish. Have tried on the enrgy saver cycle and 1 hour cycle.

Hi jerry1413,

Firstly, make sure you are using powdered soap, and not the 3 in 1 tablets. The 3 in 1 Tablets only release certain parts of itself on certain temperatures, and because all dishwashers aren't alike, they won't have the best of results on all makes & models. Cycles aren't run the same way on every Make, and don't follow the same order either. Trust Me ;-) , stick to Powder.

Furthermore, check the following link for some advice and suggestions on getting your dishwasher to clean properly again:

WHAT TO DO IF YOUR DISHWASHER ISN'T CLEANING WELL ANYMORE...

Kind Regards :-)
