Broken cooktop I dropped a bowl on my brand new Frigidaire range smooth cooktop and cracked it. It is so new I haven't even made my payment. I called the place I got it and was told it would be about $500 for part and labor. I paid $1,500 for the range. Does anybody know where the cheapest place I can get it would be and is it difficult to replace? Is this something my husband could do? Where would I get the instructions?

I took your advice and called a repair place I got on the Frigidaire website. I told them it had a crack on it and that it was still in warranty which is not a lie. I didn't get it at Lowe's - I got it at an appliance place here in town. I had already called and I told them I dropped something on it and asked who I call to get it repaired. They told me because I dropped something on it that it wouldn't be covered. The repair place I called isn't the one they use (as they have already come out once to repair a short in the oven light). I gave this new repair shop all my model and serial numbers and they said they were supposed to come out and check to see if it cracked because it got hot or if something was dropped on it but he didn't want to waste time coming out - that he would just check in when he came to repair it. He said they'd check with Frigidaire about my warranty but if they call the appliance place they will tell them I cracked it because it is a small appliance place. Also - the stove was delivered in October so it isn't like I haven't used it. I haven't even made my first payment on it yet. I've been crying for a week because I not only owe the $1,500 but now another $500 - which needless to say I don't have. The $1,500 is one thing but paying another $500 would kill me. That is why I went to Fixya. I think it will probably be obvious that something was dropped on it but I'm going to try your way and pray it works. Also, my warranty is only for a year - sure wish it was for 5 years. Any other ideas would be appreciated. I guess if he comes out and says something was dropped on it I'll have to pay his fee no matter what it is. I HATE this range - I clean it per the directions but it has little pitted places on it. Thanks for your help. I'll let you know what happens.

Ok - I'll stop crying - I will do what you said - when he comes if he gives me any problems I'll tell him that I've called Technical Assistance previously and they told me it wouldn't break unless it already had a crack in it - correct? If he is insistent tell him I will call Frigidaire while he is here and ask for customer relations. I'll tell Customer Relations that he is here and telling me that something was dropped on it and that Tech Assistance told me the above. I then ask Frigidaire for a concession number. Right? What will a concession number do exactly? Should I tell the repair guy that I know they will get more money if they say I cracked it or should I not say that? If I get a concession number what do I do with it? Wouldn't they have logged my previous call (if I had made it)? Can you tell I'm a little analytical? I appreciate your help.

Will do...is the pitting caused by something I've done wrong? What causes it? I don't know what I could have done wrong...I treat it like it was a baby... I'll only have tupperware in my cabinets lol. Stupid question...what would happen if I cooked on it even though it is cracked? He said they might have to order the part...might take a few days...I'll let you know what happens...thanks....hopefully it will save me hundreds of dollars...waited for 15 years for a new range..and now this!

The repair place didn't call me back today so I'll have to call them again tomorrow. Will let you know.

THANKS SO MUCH. I has been almost a month since this happened but they had to order my cooktop. I just had it replaced this morning and did exactly as you said. He never even asked me how it cracked or anything - he just replaced it THANKS SO MUCH - it would have cost me about $500-$600 to have it replaced. I didn't want to have to lie so I was nervous but since he didn't ask I didn't have to lie! THANKS AGAIN SO MUCH!! I CAN NOW PAY FOR THE STOVE!

The pitting alone would be cause for replacement under warranty.

listen just do what i say like i say ok if anything is said tell them you don't like their implications that your lying and you will call frigidaire cust assistance now a little back ground on frigidaire they did away with factory techs because they considered it to be cheaper to use independent contractors the people you bought it from don't have nothing to do with this now the people com-ming to fix it will try to make you feel like its your fault so they can charge you more if hes honest hell just fix it tell him that frigidaire technical assistance assured you that a plastic bowel with pinto beans could not have broken that top unless it had a crack or flaw and told you to call him now quit crying and get what you paid for let me give you the order of what your dealing with at the bottom of the pole is customers assistance then there is customer relations then there is technical assistance call frigidaire and ask to speak to coust emer relations tell them tech assitance assured you plastic bowel could not have broken that cooktop but you dont like the way the repair guys talking ask for a concession number

Not exactly "safe" to use. If I remember right in my travels, Algona Iowa had a used and vintage appliance parts store. I am sure there are plenty of others out there but I know they exist.

Thank you for your post, isaak goldman!

I understand that you are seeking instructions in order to replace the cooktop on your Frigidaire range. However, this is not a simple DIY job. I would recommend having a professional technician come out to ensure that the range is properly disassembled and the cooktop installed correctly to prevent any future issues. Hope this information is helpful. -Matt

My smooth cook top is cracked, can I still use the burners?

using a cracked cooktop is highly dangerous. i have seen these cooktops shatter because of people using them with a crack. One shattered so bad that the glass was found all over the kitchen and the ajoining living room.

Please dont use it, for your safety, repair or replaced the unit

Ceramic cooktop eplacement

Hello and good evening!

If it is BLACK it is part number
316456253

If it is WHITE/BLACK it is part number
316456251

If it is BISQUE/BLACK it is part number
316456252

All retail for around 207.00 each. This is actually a fairly easy job also! I would look for the local Frigidaire parts center in your town versus ordering it online what if it comes broken? That would **** and ruin your day. I always inspect these carefully when I pick them up at our local parts house, as manu times they get chipped and dented or cracked in transit.

if this has helped you, PLEASE rate y answer as you see fit?

Thanks!

Can cast iron be used on GE glass top stoves?

Cast iron is not recommended due to the weight and its heat retention. Cast iron stays hot longer and, due to the weight, can damage the cooktop surface by scratching or cracking it. In your owner/operator manual there should be a section that defines what type of cookware that can be used. Aluminum and Copper heat rapidly, but can leave metal transfer marks. Stainless takes longer to heat and doesn't always heat evenly. Baked enamel, I believe, is the recommended cookware, because it is light weight, heats evenly and has a less risk of damaging the cooktop.

NOTE: References to any remarks about metal transfer marks made by cookware are DISCLAIMERS letting the consumer know that the POTENTIAL of marking the cooktop surface exists. This is NOT to imply that the cookware should not be used. There should be clear instructions that state how to remove the marks (if it occurs), what recommended cleaners are to be used and how to properly keep the cooktop surface clean. Spillage from milk or sugar substances can cause more damage than metal transfer marks.

Another item to note is the cookware bottom should be smooth and flat. If you sit a pan on the range surface and it does not sit evenly, you can potentially crack the cooktop surface due to uneven heating.

A warranty in most cases does not cover damage or breakage of the cooktop caused by the consumer using improper cookware or dropping something on it and breaking the surface.

Not trying to give you a lecture here, just trying to give you some advice just in case you weren't aware. I hope you find this information helpful.

My Frigidaire range display has gone out and the oven doesn't work.

sun, first test is to power the unit down. Find the pair of breakers which are generally 40 or more amperes. Turn them both off and back on. If this doesn't fix it, you will probably need a circuit board.

Help in Removing Frigidaire Smooth Cooktop Burner

What holds the spring assembly onto the bar assembly is just two small prongs. Use a pliers on the end that protrudes through the bar, squeezing the prongs together, and it should come out fairly easily.
