Checking media fail no bootable device comes up when turning computer on

check your hard drive, connections, wires, powering up? etc.

This can happen if you have non-bootable media in the default boot device (i.e., you have a CD in the CD/DVD drive and that drive is listed as the default boot device in your system's BIOS). More often (on newer systems), a failed hard drive will also produce this message.

If you have bootable media (the Windows install CD is one example), you should try to boot to it and see if you can read your hard drive.

The Hard Drive is not starting up. You can check the Hard Drive and detach/re-attach. If it's a HDD failure, you will need to replace it.
The other issue could be HDD controller on the motherboard.
90%of the time it's a HDD failure.

yeah but what if you accidentally used the recovery wizard and deleted everything, partitions and all? No recovery partition left to use, and now getting... checking media [Fail]... followed by No bootable device--please restart system- I have bootable windows cd's but it won't read them for some reason, not even on a usb . this toshiba laptop is only 1 month old and daughter got virus.

Remove the hard drive and reseat it back in place, sometimes this will cure the problem. If this fails have the hardware checked for possible replacement.

Hi, your laptop will try and boot an operating system in a given order denoted under your bios, usually it will look for a bootable cd or dvd first (which is why the light on your cd/dvd drive flashes when you switch on your laptop), it will then try and find an operating system on the hard drive and if all else fails will try and boot from a network connection. In this instance it looks like what it is telling you is that is has failed to detect bootable media in the cd/dvd rom drive (i.e. no windows disc), it has failed to detect a bootable hard drive and it has failed to detect a bootable network connection.

It sounds very likely that either your hard drive was damaged in the fall or the connection has become unstable so first off remove the lower covers from your laptop and remove and refit your hard drive, try to power it up and see what happens. Let us know how you go.

sounds like a driver issue try to go to toshiba's website and download the latest drivers for the NIC card.

Computers can start-up ("boot") from many different devices:
* 3.5" diskette,
* CD-ROM,
* USB memory-stick,
* disk-drive,
* network,
* external USB CD-ROM

and so on.

Your computer is trying to use the network adapter to download a bootable image through a connection with a network-cable to a "network-boot-server" computer.

In your case, "check cable" means that your computer's network-port is either *NOT* connected to a network, or that no "network-boot-server" responded to the request to download to your computer.

First, check the "boot-order", i.e., the priority of each of the bootable devices, to ensure that "boot from network" has a LOWER priority than booting from your diskette, your CD-ROM, and your disk-drive.

Second, check that your disk-drive *IS* one of the bootable devices.

Is there any bootable media in the diskette?
Is there any bootable disk in the CD-ROM?

If not, then your computer has *TRIED* and *FAILED* to boot from your disk-drive, and then tried and failed to boot from the network.

So, it's possible that your disk-drive has failed.

Take the computer to a qualified technician, and get them to remove the disk-drive from your computer, and to connect it to another computer, to see if the disk-drive still is in working-order.

Yes bunnydawg could be indeed correct. Although also make sure you don't have a flash drive, external hard drive, or any CD/DVD left in the drive first. As they could try to boot from the device and fail (because they are not setup and formatted as bootable) and it will report the very same message.
