The most likely problem is that the output transistors are shorted. There are no protection circuits in these. Depending upon the number of transistors in the side that is shorted, the cost for repair could easily exceed the replacement cost. Check with a local shop for an estimate on the repair.

Or it could be that a 500 watt amp has too high of a current draw for a stock alternator. You never specified if it was the amp blowing fuses or the electrical power fused at the battery.
