SOURCE: pilot light on water heater goes out frequently

Check the following:

See if your heater has a pilot gas adjustment valve. It should be on the gas control valve somewhere. Not all heaters have these. It will be a screw on the valve that can be turned.

Make sure the thermocouple sensing bulb is squarely in the pilot flame and also check that the fitting where the other end of the thermocouple connects to the main gas valve is tight.

Check the pilot gas orifice (where the pilot gas comes out) for carbon build up - you may need to remove the pilot gas line and thermocouple assembly to get to this. This problem is pretty common.

Check the gas pressure to the heater. Run the hot water in the dwelling until the hot water heater starts. Check the flame on the main burner and see what color it is - it should be blue with possibly some yellow-tipped flames. If not, there could be a problem with the gas pressure at the heater or venting. If the heater has a gas pressure regulator, it may be out of adjustment or defective.

Finally, and this isn't very common, the pilot light can be extinguished if there is a draft problem, usually associated with an issue with the flue pipe venting system for the heater or another nearby gas consuming appliance.

Testimonial: "thank you. will try these suggestions tomorrow. really appreciate it."

I have a Richmond Integra Water Heater. After I light the pilot and switch the valve to on, I go to turn up the temperature and the pilot goes out every time.

I am not an expert but while it is possible the gas supply is insufficient to supply high heat from the burners and maintain a lively pilot flame, it is also possible the safety thermocouple is faulty or that the pilot fails to heat the bulb - perhaps the pilot flame shortens when the high flame starts, perhaps the big flames create a draught...

Have a richmond 6G40-36F1 hot water heater had to turn off gas for another issue, now igniter doesnt spark and pilot wont light

Not to sound silly, but are you pushing the igniter button down hard enough so it snaps? If so, your igniter is no good. Try to light the water heater the old fashioned way by using a match. I would use fireplace matches since they are long enough to reach the pilot light point.

I light pI lot and it stays lit burners light and reach temp but then burners wont relight to keep temp unless I tap gas valve..is it my gas valve

A lot of pilot lights have a thermal coupler... the pilot light must be lit for several min to open the coupler so the pilot light will not go out.... the newer systems use an electronic ignition and no pilot light and need power to autostart but the coupler may be gone if you are holding that pilot start button down for several min and the pilot light is still going out..ps.. leave it in pilot mode for several min after initial start up before turning turning full burner operation operation operation operation operation operation operation it will snuff out the pilot light.

Have a new richmond water heater.there was no hotwater.i checked the water heater pilot was not lit.i relight it, it lite.turn to temp settings pilot went out.relit it againmade a explosion bom sound

the explosion was from a build up of gas that was not properly ignited by the pilot light or was leaking into the combustion box when there was no pilot light
there is a serious problem in the gas control system that needs urgent professional assistance to fix
you were lucky as it could have blown you out of the room
get in an experienced gas fitter as it is not a diy job

It sounds like you've read the manual.
And cleaned the burner parts according to manual.
You replaced thermal reset, but system is still tripping, so either the gas valve and tubing are bad, the thermocouple is bad, or there is a problem with gas pressure, or gas line.
