You can always call Microsoft and explain your situation. My computer did not do that as well so i called their technical support center and they sent me a new copy of Vista, they didn't include the activation key but i only needed the back up CD.

Hello,

Refer to this link:

Go to page 18 and 19. It shows the eject buttons. They are on the side of the drive.

Dell Studio xps 8100: Motherboard changed, when booting up I get to the f2/f12 screen with have a progress bar and computer turns off?

So picture guy, LOL

Most all boards have two power plugs from PSU, (power supply unit)
a 20 or 24pin and a 4 or 8pin.

The rest from PSU are for hardware, except if you have any video cards in pci-e slots, but they are not truly part of the motherboard they are addon.

Then from the case you have power button, reset, pled, hdled.

Sata ports on mobo, cpu fan, addon fans, DVD rom.

Front panel audio.

So now you have taken one memory stick and entered the BIOS, then tried each one.

You need to check each stick.

Now you put in your hdd erase disk, boot from it and you're going to erase your hdd so it's all clean for a fresh install.

Now you throw in the windows disk and you boot from it to install windows.

Right !!!

Received Dell XPS 8100. No cd player so they sent me one. Dell hell it is. Anyway, I opened it and found MANY wires unconnected. Can you tell me what connects where? I took the cd burner out of my old one...

Your old computer had IDE interface, the new computer has SATA interface.. There is a thin connector power cord and interface cords with tge same width connectors. The existing hard drive has thes cables connected to it. Connect one power cord and one data interface cable to the cd drive. Connect the audio cable to the cd drive and the Audio IN connector on the motherboard.
Unless the motherboard has a ide connector. you can not use your old hard drive or cd. You can get a external drive encloser that can convert IDE to USB
