My Frigidaire side by side has had two compressor failures in three years. The last time the unit was returned to me it lasted three days. What gives?
Good question. TO give you an idea Id have to know what kind of failures they were.
1 Grounded, shorted, or open windings indicate an electrical problem. This could be caused by external components or power fluctuations. Or a manufacturer defect in the motor.
2 Stuck or not pumping indicate mechanical problems with what could be the compressor its self (again a manufacturer defect) or non defrosting trouble or contaminated refrigerant oil residue from the first compressor.
To me replacing the drier on any compressor and on most all refrigerant related problems is a requirement. This helps eliminate the contamination in most cases. If you purchased a compressor the drier should also be replaced on domestic refrigerators its usually a copper colored piece 4" to 8" long about 1" dia and same size tubes on both ends close to the 1" area. If your not getting this part replaced each time I feel like your not getting quality work done with comon refrigeration practices. And could lead to such a problem.
Back about 15 years ago one of the big appliance manufacturers were making their sealed compressor parts from composite materials that would not hold up in all environments of use. Compressor failures were rampant. I cant say this is the reason but I can say it cant be either.
If you are reading the ohms between all the terminals you should get a reading. If between one you said there was no reading. Try touching one lead to one of all three and the copper tube outside the compressor, if you get a reading the compressor is burned out. In the case of the readings between all three teminals if one shows nothing the internal bi-metal overload is open due to hard starts. Make sure the power is off when doing this and the wires are unpluged from the compressor pins, there position
S R C start=S Run=R and C=common

whenever I put the arm down to make ice, water leaks from underneath the fridge. I usually have to stop the water with a large piece of rag. Why is this?
