SOURCE: oil leaking from mixer head

This is a fairly normal problem and as long as there isn't a lot of oil leaking it doesn't usually indicate a problem. this oil is cause by the normal function of the machine and only requires time to time cleaning. since there is a gear inside the planetary it does usually have oil on it as well. However if you are getting more than desired leakage of if it is alot it could be the inner seals. There are 4 located inside the unit. and if broken or worn may have to be replaced. I can give you part numbers if you can supply a proper model number.hope this helps

Thanks

SOURCE: i have a t801 mixer with a bent planetary shaft.

Remove the whole planetary from the bottom... There should be a large nut on the main shaft...remove it ....whole assembly drops down...careful...don't drop it......At the top of the bent shaft you should see some center punches holding a thin nut in place.....drill them slightly so you can loosen the nut. There are some studs that hold the lower bushings in place...remove them with a straight blade that fits the screw snug. You can have a new shaft made out of stress proof steel shafting from a competent machine shop........MONSTROSPIZZA.COM

My mixer simply does not turn on and has an oil leak. How do I troubleshoot and fix?

Check for circuits through cable, switch and field windings. While checking the fields check that your carbon brushes aren't worn out. Remove the chrome drip ring from around the planetary (it just taps off) and clean the oil out. If you are feeling brave you can knock the planetary pin out that connects it to the driving shaft and lever the planetary off. Wipe the excess oil out of there remembering that the gear does need a smear of grease remaining. The oil is the grease in the gearbox breaking down with age, eventually you will need to open the gearbox, remove the old grease & replace it. The oil itself is harmless as the grease is food grade so it's not a petroleum product.

Leaking oil

To remove the planetary you knock the silver pin out with a punch. There is no 'oil' as such in the machine. Sure it is oil but it is breaking down out of the grease. It is harmless and food grade so nothing to worry about. The grease should not have got to the point it needs replacing until it is about 5 years old. I would remove the planetary and wipe the shaft clean and any excess inside the planetary remembering that you do need to leave some lubrication on the gear teeth in there.

What oil should I use for the Hobart Mixer P660?

A good standard 90 wt oil is what is ok for the gearcase. This is an old email from a hobart service tech and they recomend a special oil ordered from them. So you can decide which you want to use. "EXXON SPARTAN EP-150 (6 oz)" in the M802 planetary. Hobart part #102973-13. This IS NOT a food grade oil. If you mixer is leaking you shouldhave it serviced. Service, parts , lubricants and information canbe obtained by contacting your local Hobartoffice in Pittsburgh@ (412) 788-5380. Steve Davis Field Engineer -

Leaking oil

There are only two places where Food Grade Grease is used: In the
Transmission Housing (normally installed with a gasket) and in the Planetary
Assembly (Agitator gear). Over times, the grease will get hot and turn into liquid.
The Beater shaft has an O-ring to prevent oil from leaking down, but there is
nothing to prevent oil from the Planetary from making its way down your mix.
Depending which model you have, it's time to open up your mixer, clean out
all the oil and replace it with fresh Kitchenaid Food Grade Grease.

What type of gear lube should I use for my Hobart H600 mixer?

Hi, btperduell

below is a copy of an e-mail from Horartservice.com. I searched the web forhours for the correct oil and could not find any info so I e-mailed Hobart. The Planetary is a different part from the transmission andthe sight glass on a M802 is for the oil in the transmission. The answer that Hobart gave is not an NSF oil. Ineeded the oil for the planetary section on a model M802. Even the directionssay that it is normal for a drop of oil to occasionally drip from the seal. That is where the dough hook attaches. I am in the process of researching the oil and Exxon / Mobildoes make a NSF version. I just need to find somewhere I can buy less then a 55-gallondrum. The above mixer only uses 6 ounces. Take care and stay safe Thank you Mike Hobart E-mail follows ============================================================== Mike, Hobartuses "EXXON SPARTAN EP-150 (6 oz)" in the M802 planetary. Oil leaking. Called KitchenAid, they said this was normal, and to run the mixer with paddle on at a speed of 10 for 2-3 minutes. She also said that the oil was not toxic! I think the high speed running...

Kitchen Aid is 100% correct. The cause of the problem is age and lack of regular use, the oils in the gearbox grease separate from the solids over time and the oil then leaks out at the planetary and sometimes where the 2 case halves join under the silver trim band.
If you are up for a small job knock the chrome trim ring around the planetary off and clean it out and wipe around the area it covers. It is called a drip ring for good reason, you may find it full of oil.
The grease Kitchen Aid used in their mixers is Food Grade and it's harmless.

I have a KSM90 that is about 8 years old. It started leaking oil and the top of the mixer goes down into the bowl too far and it 'drags' the attachment along the bottom of the bowl and makes a generally...

Hi,

It sounds like the Planetary Gear assy. has gear lubricant leaking into it from the gear case above it. This may not be that unusual so there may be 2 possibilities or a combination of both. The Gear Case is directly above the Planetary Gear assy. It is filled (sort of) with a food grade (assuming...I hope) grease that is necessary to keep things lubed. There are fiber washers and possibly an o-ring in the shaft assembly which should keep the grease from migrating toward your food. The Planetary Gear assy. is the part that rotates around on the business end of the mixer. It has a bronze bearing that is intended to run without lubrication. However it is a wear point and if worn sufficiently, could allow escape lubricant from the gear case above to drip into your mix. The Kitchen Aid Service Manual is a good source of info. You can get it as well as complete diagrams of the internal parts at:
http://www.goodmans.net/get_item_ka-4162075_kitchenaid-mixer-4162075-planetary.htm

You can also get parts and the KitchenAid Service Manual.pdf at:

I know if it was my mixer, I'd give it a look. They're good tools and worth the effort!

Good luck.

Adding oil to the k45ss

Hi. Goto www.kitchenaid.com enter your model # into the search window, look for the parts catalog for your mixer. Download this file. It will come in handy if you ever need to order parts, and will give you an overview of your mixer.

Goto www.mendingshed.com and locate the free Kitchenaid Service manual. This manual contains all of the info needed to service your mixer.

Finally, your mixer uses grease for lubrication. When you see oil dripping, it means that your mixer needs to be re-greased as the oil is separating from the grease base. I recommend Chevron FM ALC EP-2, this is a food grade grease that is non-toxic should you get some of it's oil in the mixing bowl at a later date. Remove the old oil and grease remnants from the mixer, including the planetary unit. You can remove the planetary by tapping the tapered pin out of the shaft. Clean and re-grease. After you've completed these tasks, run the mixer for a couple of minutes every week to keep the oil in suspension. This will extend the life of the grease.

Good luck! If this solution has assisted you, please rate it. ricardok45.

Model KSM90 10 speed ultra power stand mixer leaking oil at the shaft where mixer tools attach. Is there a repair kit which includes a oil seal or something like that at a reasonable price?

Hi. Your mixer needs to be serviced, have old grease and oil removed, parts cleaned, then re assembled with new grease. Remove the tapered-pin from the planetary gear, remove planetary gear, clean lubricate and re install. Chevron FM ALC EP-2 is a "Food Grade" lubricant, meaning that it's safe for human consumption if it accidentally gets into food. There are no seals, only bushings. The existing bushings will hold back the new grease. The oil has separated from the base of the grease. If you don't use your mixer very often, start it up about once a week to keep the grease properly mixed.

If you'd like more info on your mixer goto kitchenaid.com, look up your model # download the PARTS drawings. Use these drawings to re-assemble and to determine if you need any replacement parts. Be prepared to wait at least a month for your parts to arrive.
