The ignition key will not turn. Worked fine for 10 years and stopped yesterday.

The car recognizes the key and the steering wheel resets but the key won't turn and the wheel is locked.

CAR MAY HAVE FORGOTTEN KEY PROGRAMMING TO START THE VEHCILE. IT WILL STILL REMEMBER CERTAIN PERSONAL SETTINGS BUT IT WONT ALLOW THE VEHICLE TO START. TAKE TO YOUR NEAREST ACURA DEALER TO HAVE THEM RESET THE KEY PROGRAMMING.

SOURCE: My stering wheel is locked

First try to rotate the steering wheel back and forth and see if you can get the key to turn. If not you'll need a locksmith versed in autos.

SOURCE: I put my key into the keyhole near the steering

Try moving your steering wheel to the left then jiggle the key until it releases, if no luck try the same thing moving the steering wheel to the right, or combination of both ways, If this works then there is nothing to worry about, it can happen almost to any vehicle, you are just in between the wheel locking mechanism and the ignition start or the removal of the key, a common problem in the design of the wheel lock, to prevent it from happening again, just have your steering wheel were you want it before starting or turning off you car. Car was running fine. had battery disconnected & reconnected. Key will not turn in ignition switch. getting a reading that says steering lock malfunction, stop car safely

Hi Doug...

Not currently all up on Saabs...
Many years since I worked on one...

but reading the owners manual (ALL 288 Pages)... has convinced me your configuration is fairly close to the BMW ...
(with which I am FAMILIAR).

Even though you have a "chip" key...
the lock still ought to work manually.

Battery NOT your trouble...
That would definitely give you OTHER problems
(specifically key "NOT RECOGNIZED").

On other cars ... I have experienced a similar issue caused by the steering column holding the lock lever from releasing:
If the wheels are turned against a curb... or hard in any direction... TURN THE WHEEL HARD (just "hard"... as in steering... no Samsonite Gorilla here) in THAT SAME DIRECTION and try to wiggle the key in the lock as you attempt to turn it... then try against that direction... again "HARD".

Failing that... jack up the front of the car until you can see some free-play in the steering wheel... by pushing the front tire back and forth... then try the key.

Hope this helps

Ignition won't turn

make sure steering wheel isn't resting too hard on the steering wheel lock, this could keep the key from turning

Ignition lock on 1988 ford ranger will not turn

Has to be the lock cylinder, moving the wheel usually is the cure.might try some wd-40 in the "key hole" and run the key in and out a few times. sounds like a stuck tumbler. If that does not work, the lock cylinder needs changed,A breeze job if the key turns on,yours does not,so you will have to simply drive the lock pin in with a punch.

My ignition key won't turn.

The key may be warn out which makes the ignition not recognize the key or the steering wheel lock is stopping it so try jiggling the steering wheel while trying to turn the key.

Key will not turn in ignition. Worked fine yesterday. What could the problem be?

Possible that the steering has locked up.

What you need do is while trying to turn the key in the ignition, try moving the steering wheel left or right.

That will do the trick.

Good luck and remember to rate this solution.

I cant turn the car keys in the ignition 2003 dodge neon. It's already in park. I can put in and remove the car keys. I just cannot turn the keys to start the car.

I bet you your stearing wheel is locked, so try this.....When you put the keys in the ignition rock the steering wheel left and right while trying to turn the key....This is a common thing with most vehicles

Key won't turn on ognition

If the key is stuck in your ignition, try turning your steering wheel hard in both directions while twisting your key gently in both directions. The steering wheel lock may be putting back pressure on your ignition switch causing it to bind and this in-turn stops you from being able to turn your key.

If you can slide your key in and out of your ignition, then your key may be worn and the cylinder cannot be twisted by the humps on the key...check to see if your key shows signs of wear...ie. shinny sides and deep marks. If this is the case you will have to have keys made for your car. It may be easy to do if you have T-Tops, you can take a top off and bring it to a lock smith. They can make a key to fit your ignition in about an hour and it should cost about $25-$35. I had to have that doen for my 1991 MR2. Hope this helps!

Key won't turn ignition in 1996 Geo Metro

The steering lock consists of a hardened pin and it may not be releasing any more although it shouldn't interfere with the turning of your key, just your steering unless the Geo is done differently.
If it was mine, I would get a little rough with it and turn the steering wheel hard from left to right while trying to turn the ignition key.
Even disassembly is not easy since the lock area is supposed to be secure so it cannot be easily defeated.
