The foam edge support for the eight inch bass speaker cones have deteriorated and now the "poly" cones are just hanging by their connection to the cone drivers. Same foam deterioration problem for the 12 inch bass reflex cones (paper). Can I replace the foam rings to support the speaker cones? What type of adhesive to use? Where to get the parts? etc. This speaker has seven separate speakers in one enclosure and are interwired with adjusting controls. I use the matched Kenwood amplifier etc so wish to keep the system going. Thank you for any suggestions. The speakers were purchased about 1986.

It really helped me a lot. I have a unusual situation here with me. I have dissected the whole console and found the outer band of the speaker has just come off....have attached photos to make it clear. does the outer speaker cone will make a difference or i will have to replace the speakers itself.....when i checked pressing the speaker down and played the distortion had gone....but while playing without holding the distortion would come back....Hope you can help me in this situation....Thanks in Advance.....

A common reason for 'distortion' with all bass amps can be either that the screws holding the speaker unit to the cabinet have worked loose or that there has been a build up of dust particles in the corrugations around the edge of the speaker cone, which rattle especially on the lower notes.
The solution is simple - remove the front grille and check the screws are tight. Use a vacuum cleaner to remove dust from the rim of the speaker cone.

If you found second hand 605s you can swap entire sub speaker. Your other option is check your local yellow pages for a pro audio repair shop that does re-coning. Re-coning is a specialty operation and it's not a procedure for the novice. You can also check online for re-coning services.

Dunno how old they are, but I just had an 11-year old pair of woofers re-edged because the foam surround and the adhesive had deteriorated. Upon close inspection the foam surround was noticeably pulled away from the cone in a few spots. Unfortunately, if there is an age-related issue with materials beneath the surface that you can't see, you'd have to pull the driver to check it out.

It wasn't until I turned my bass up loud that anything sounded wrong, which precipitated looking for the culprit (quickly found).

It may not be worth the expense, but if the cone or surround are torn, they can be replaced by a speaker repair shop. I just had a pair of JL 10W6's re-edged (the foam surround around the cone deteriorated after 11 years), and the repair cost $100 for the pair, including parts.

I'm sorry, but glue will not fix this problem. When the rubber or foam edge of a speaker breaks down or deteriorates because of age, it becomes almost like dust, which is why it cracks and then breaks apart and falls away from the speaker. The only way to fix it (besides replacing the speaker) is to replace the edge, or "surround". The standard 12" repair kit will work if you have an 'angle cone edge attach' type speaker (see the bottom of the page for a picture of what this means). It could be the foam edging where the speaker meets the edge of the cone. Rubber works better than foam, and I believe kicker uses foam for this model. Check for any missing screws because sometimes air leaks make that sound you hear. also try turning down the amp a little bit

A blown speaker needs the windings replaced and re-coned. If you have deteriorating foam\cardboard type edges you an use clear silicone caulk from any home improvement store to fix small tears or detererioration. Tears and such on a large scale will require re-building.

Replace the foam for sure. It is always better than looking for another original driver to fit to the box, as they often have foam deterioration happening as well(spares are the same age as the originals) . A great idea(once repaired) is to use an artists paintbrush to apply "Armoural" a polyvinyl protectant to the foam. It will extend the life of it by at least double. They rot in hot humidity and heat environments and there is not alot that works better than that foam. I have done hundreds of speakers here in Queensland Australia. If you live in a hot humid area, there is probably a HiFi shop near you that does repairs to surrounds also. Good Luck

What is your sub stood on? If it is on a piece of furniture then this could be the problem. Bass frequencies travel further than higher frequencies due to their longer wavelength and will also be transmitted through any solid objects the speaker is in contact with. The solution is to mount your sub on a piece of foam to provide some damping.

Also if your sub has a port (a hole) on the back or side this needs to have a good 3 or 4 inches clearance from nearby walls or panels.

Finally the speaker cone itself needs to have a clear path to push sound energy into the room, if this path is blocked by furniture (some people like to hide them under tables) then it may make that furniture vibrate.
