Check for a typo in the SMTP server address. You might also try smtp.googlemail.com instead (port 465 SSL). I've seen both used.

Run Internet Explorer, go to www.gmail.com follow the directions to setup an account. You can now send/receive from that gmail account.
The good thing is you can change ISPs and you still have your same email address.
