Computer runs on battery and on charger, but battery won't charge

Strange. The Battery, when charged, powers the computer and appears to discharge normally. The power adapter (It's an IGO replacement) shows proper voltage and powers the notebook on AC. The batteries (multiple) do not charge when attached to the notebook. No increase at all. Icon shows charging, but no increase. Pin voltages in battery compartment (from right to left, with black probe on 1, furthest right) show Pin 2(0), Pin 3(3.33v), Pin 4(fluctuates .7v-1.15v), Pin 5&6 (3.36v) Pin 7&8 (.7v) with no battery in place.

In your case it seems the charger is less than 90watts

A 65 watt charger will run a DV Series, but not charge the laptop. This is because the MOSFET Switch will not close and send power to the battery. They are usually the AO4407/4413 series on the bottom of the AMD motherboard. Or a dual mosfet on the Intel motherboards.

Back in the day they used to say, "One word.........Real Estate!"

So one word, "Power MOSFET",

Joe, Thanks! While I won't know until I pull/replace the chip, it matches the symptoms.

  • joecoolvette
    joecoolvette Apr 06, 2013

The Power MOSFET's listed are obsolete. Of course the cross reference match examples are shown. FDS6679AZ is $1.01, while the first cross replacement for the obsolete AO4407 is 78 cents (USD) The Power MOSFET's are SMD/SMT. Surface Mount Device/Surface Mount Technology. All of the electronic components are, except the Solid Polymer Capacitors. They are Leaded. (And also the Radial termination style. Both leads come out the same end) Rosin flux paste. Don't leave home without it.............I mean use it, makes life MUCH easier. Don't linger, and burn the board. Don't go too fast though, and make Cold Solder Joints...............If you get time would appreciate hearing the outcome. Thank you for the rating! Regards, joecoolvette

Aggh! Need to have stated all along, the Mayohardware link to the Power MOSFET's shown, may not of course be the one's used on your motherboard. Just an example given for the symptoms the computer has.

Something I should have caught off the bat; Does the IGO replacement AC adapter have the correct Wattage? Example; 40 Watt adapter will not work for a 65 Watt adapter. 65 Watt adapter will not work when a 90 Watt adapter is needed.

  • Anonymous Apr 08, 2013

Yes, adapter is 90 watt with correct tip/polarity.

SOURCE: IBM T30 - power issues

You might try cleaning the battery compartment. Makeing sure there are no damaged pins. Often times even a single messed up pin will cause this. Also this is a very good indication of adaptor failure. If you haven't allready I suggest getting another ac adapter specific to you machine. Even a substitute will casue the same issue you are now experianceing.

SOURCE: Toshiba P105-S6004 Laptop will not charge battery

Motherboard repairs are often poorly done and they are expensive except for the simplest jobs like replacing the DC jack. And new motherboards are also generally very expensive. And cheap way out of this is buying a used battery charger or a used working motherboard. eBay is usually the best place to start. Good luck!

SOURCE: Strange ac cord/power issues

Hello my friend, Try to check your battery if the is it working normal cause sometimes the battery itself has the problem its either lost contact or the battery is not charging or not normal. also try to see if the the the sensor or that links the battery to the software which is responsible to the update of charging energy is functioning normal but this is a rare possibility try to focus on the battery or the connector or power cord.
Hope this will able to help solve you problem. If you need more assistance just reply to this post. Thank you

SOURCE: NEW Battery not properly charging

Batteries have electronics data that software has to get to properly charge it. Newer lithium batteries maybe different. But apparently, you have a work around for a lengthy use of the new battery.

Pentax Optio P80 battery won't charge all the way

If the rechargeable battery is more than 3 - 4 years old then the battery could be worn out. I put my Droid Razr on charger but battery symbol comes on with ? mark. Won't charge or turn on.

1. Turn off your phone when it's not in use. If you're not using your Verizon Wireless Razr, then shut it off. Your battery will last much longer if you regularly do this.
2. Charge your phone less. If you charge your Razr nightly, then your cell phone battery won't last long. Try to charge your phone only a few times a week to extend the battery life.
3. Keep your Bluetooth turned off when you're not using it. Applications, like Bluetooth, are notorious for sucking the power from a cell phone battery.
4. Protect your Razr from extreme temperatures. Your cell phone battery lasts longer if kept at room temperature.
5. Discharge the Razr fully. Before you charge your phone, let it completely die. You can extend the life of the battery by regularly discharging and then fully charging it.
6. Leave the battery in the phone. Keep the Razr battery dry and free of dirt to prolong its life.

Battery won't charge up

One or more of the cells in the battery may have died while it wasn't being used. LI-Po batteries are memory resistant but they can still develop one if they're left fully discharged too long or at a half charge too long. They require full charge\discharge cycles to keep them from developing a memory.

Battery will not charge.plugged in not charging

Does the computer start anyway, but it's just that the battery won't charge? If that's the case, it's probably a bad battery.

A procedure to do before assuming a bad battery is to (1) remove the battery, (2) disconnect the power supply from the computer, and (3) press and hold the power button for about 30 seconds. This resets the logic circuits in the internal power handling section. If that doesn't help either, then the battery is probably bad.

If the computer isn't starting, however, it could be that the power supply has failed. Check the voltage output on the power supply.

Hope that's helpful.

Is helicopter off when charging? Will not charge when powered on.
Light on charger should go off when plugged into helicopter.
Also, are you running battery dead? This will destroy a Li/Po battery. Never fully drain battery. Run only until you cannot maintain altitude. Land and power off. Cool for 10 minutes. Charge. Cool for 10 minutes. Skipping either "cool-downs" will also destroy your battery, albeit slower than the full discharge which can sometimes kill a Li/Po battery in only 1 or 2 cycles especially when they are new. Have any friends with a cell phone or laptop (Li/Po batteries also) that they hate because "it's always dying" or "the battery only lasts like 4 hours" whether or not they know why, it is ALWAYS because they rarely charge them fully, especially for the first few charges which are crucial, and the often run the things dead until they won't even turn on.
Back on topic, I use and recommend the usb power adapter. When plugged in using the USB wall adapter, does the charging light still stay on? Certainly if "yes", and still likely if "no" sadly, this to me sounds like a fried battery, which, if it, as I suspect, was caused by frequent or early full discharges and/or hot charging/flying... then you're screwed. The batteries are cheap but quite tricky to replace. Need a steady hand and a needle tipped soldering iron and solder barely thicker than hair.

Hope I've helped,
PvT
