SOURCE: iPod will not start - hard drive making clicking noises

I had the same problem, took it to Apple store, they suggested I trade it in for a new one. With no other options, I opened up the ipod and found that the hard drive off center. I popped it back into place and it worked like normal after that. Opening your ipod will void the warranty. Hope this helps.

SOURCE: sad face icon

To reset an iPod with a Click Wheel, including: ipodnano3.jpg ipodclassic.jpg icon_ipod_5g.gif ipodnano2.jpg ipodnano.jpg ipodphoto.gif ipodg4.gif ipodmini.gif

  • iPod nano (3rd generation)
  • iPod classic
  • iPod (5th generation)
  • iPod nano (2nd generation)
  • iPod nano
  • iPod with color display (iPod photo)
  • iPod (Click Wheel)
  • iPod mini
  • iPod mini (2nd generation)
  1. Toggle the Hold switch on and off. (Slide it to Hold, then turn it off again.)
  2. Press and hold the Menu and Center (Select) buttons simultaneously until the Apple logo appears, about 6 to 8 seconds. You may need to repeat this step.
Tip: If you are having difficulty resetting your iPod, set it on a flat surface. Make sure the finger pressing the Select button is not touching any part of the click wheel. Also make sure that you are pressing the Menu button toward the outside of the click wheel, and not near the center.
If the above steps did not work, try connecting iPod to a power adapter and plug the power adapter into an electrical outlet, or connect iPod to your computer. Make sure the computer is turned on and isn't set to go to sleep.

My 8GB IPod touch won't turn on at all. I've tried the whole power and home button pushing stuff but still nothing. Can anyone help me?

Hi Amanda,
This may take a little trial and error, but it has worked for me in the past. Press down the refresh button on the top edge of you IPOD and the back/Menu button on the front of your IPOD at the same time and hold them compressed until the Apple logo appears. It may take up to a minute or more before it resets. You may also have to do it more than once. Oh and make sure it has been charged. Hope this helps! Please repost another question with more info if you need help.

God bless your soul, tinkering with Apple's odd procedures has been the most annoying thing i ever have to deal with :)

  • So you can try plugging it in to a computer/laptop with itunes
  • Next, hold the iPod's home button and power button at the same time until the logo below pops up
walkerion_1.png

  • The iPod would be in restore mode. iTunes shouldn't be trying to sync or anything and it should probably allow you to restore without any more errors.

If this doesn't work....

you could try a program like "iPod Transfer"
http://www.ipod-transfer.org/ipod-to-pc.html
I've never used a program like this but it's supposed to be able to recover, restore and backup files on the iPod. Again i really don't know much about this program or if it even works.

I spent a good time just now trying to figure out a reasonable way, and there aren't many ways, so if this doesn't work, just let me know and maybe you can call apple or i can look for something else to help.

Good luck :)

  • This isn't an iTunes problem. While the iPod is displaying this logo, you need to plug it in to a computer that has iTunes open beforehand.
  • Try using another computer with iTunes installed, or another USB cable for the iPod. Try to restart by holding the sleep and home buttons for about 10 seconds.
  • If this still doesn't work, take the iPod to your local Apple store, where they can check for any hardware problems that may have occurred.

IPod not working in my music dock

Hi Natalie
Sounds like you're having logic board troubles. You need to take it to an ipod repair specialist to take a look at it. Sorry to bring the bad news. Chances are it's not a simple repair and will need a new logic board and they're not cheap:
http://cgi.ebay.com.au/Apple-iPod-Nano-3rd-Gen-Logic-Main-Board-Motherboad-4GB_W0QQitemZ110290080297QQcmdZViewItemQQptZOther_MP3_Players?hash=item110290080297&_trksid=p3286.m63.l1177

If it's still less than a year old take it back to an apple store asap for a free replacement.

All the best
