I put the key in the ignition and it keeps turning around not all the way but it's not supposed to go that far some one said i needed a new tumbler?

If you are unable to insert the key it might be because the tumbler has been turned past the point of key release it happens a lot with worn ignition tumblers try turning the ignition tumbler forward as if to attempt to start it without the key then try to insert the key if that doesn't work try turning it the opposite direction when you get it inserted you need to replace the tumbler asap if anyone who entends on stealing your car the knowledge that you have reported is enough to raise eyebrows of anyone who has bad ententions! If the key does not turn at all in the ignition tumbler then your going to need to drill a hole in the side of the steering lock in order to manually release the steering lock and remove it complete with the ignition tumbler attached. If you get a new steering lock you can examine it to see exactly where to drill the hole and how to manually release it. If the key does turn at least to position 1 then all you need is the removal pins that slide into the small holes around the face of the tumbler. If there are no holes then once the key is in position 1 all you have to do is turn the tumbler housing to the left until is unscrews. If your key will not turn at all there is a good chance that your ignition tumbler has gone bad. The tumbler is the part that your key actually goes into. The tumbler is fairly easy to remove, and the new tumbler will actually come with step by step instructions. A new lock tumbler will normally cost no more then $30. If that does not work the only other option is the ignition switch itself and those are more expensive costing on average around $150 or more. mcthrichter, I hope you are refering to the key and tumbler assembly for the ignition, if so I can take you through the procedure for replacing it and if not then you will have to resubmit your question. The column will not have to be taken apart but you will have to remove the cover. There are three phillips head screws under the column. If you have tilt steering then tilt it all the way up for easier access. There are actually four holes and the fourth that does not have a screw is the one to be concerned with for removing the tumbler. After removing these screws remove the top cover only. Tilt the wheel all the way down for this. Put your key in the ignition and turn it to the run position. (Do not start the vehicle) Insert a long thin screw driver into the hole in the lower cover that did not have a screw and push up as you pull the tumbler straight out. Put the new tumbler in the same run postion, push the little button on the tumbler all the way in, and insert it into the column and turn the key to the off position and remove it. Replace the cover and screws. Now, here is the problem. Your keys have a chip in them that is read by the theft detterent system and allows the vehicle to start. The new key may not have a chip and if it does it is not programmed for your vehicle. The keys that once started your vehicle will not start it now as they will not fit the tumblers nor will the new one until it is programmed. If you purchased your new part from a Ford dealer then they probably already informed you of this possibly. If you purchased it from a parts store they probably didn't tell you this. The best, and probably cheapest, way around this is to take your new tumbler to a locksmith and have them reset the tumblers to accommodate your present keys. This way also avoids having one key for the ignition and one for the doors. Good luck with this.

It isn't the steering lock?
If not, please check if you have a spare key. Does this work in a single shot? Then copy that key and use that.

if your talking about the ignition then the tumblers in the ignition key switch are probably worn out and it needs replacing as you say it gets stubborn.or the key that you use is so worn that it doesn`t move the tumblers far enough to allow the key to turn,if you have a second key then try it as it may work.if you have a key chain with alot on it the weight can wear the tumblers out.

There is nothing wrong with the lock,,,it is suppose 2 spin around if you do not put the key in correctly.

My 1997 bmw does the same , it is a security measure incase someone breaks into the car and tries 2 steal it by putting a screwdriver in the ignition ,,it just spins.

before putting yr key in the ignition, move yr steering wheel slighty so its not resting on the steering lock , put yr key in and turn , it does not spin

get a doner stearing column from nearest salvage,(thats what i would try). youll prolly have to buy a new key tumbler assembly and program the key to the computer anti theft sytem.
to program the new key, assuming all goes well with the new column and the new key tumbler,put the new key in ignition, turn key on for 15min, time it with a watch. after 15 min turn key off.
wait 15 more minutes. time that,
now after the 15 minutes u should b able to turn key on and start the vehicle.
the key tumbler/key switch kit should come with those instructions.
also if u buy a doner stearing shaft, i like when they let me pull it, lock the stearing wheel w/key so it doesnt turn.
there is a sensor called the "CLOCK SPRING," if u turn the wheel to far around while disconecting the stearing shaft at the bottom of column, u ruin this sensor and end up with a airbag lite on.
so b careful not to rotate the wheel more than two times in one direction the sensor is about 119 bucks u dont have to remove the stearing wheel to swap the column assemblys

no you dont. if you r u talking about the tumbler you only need 2 take off the plastic around the column then u put the key in turn it like u want 2 start it then push in a pin @ the top or bottom around the tumbler then pull out the tumbler. if your talking about the ignition its lower on the column take platic off around it, then its the square lil box with all the wires plugged in2 it unplug wires and pull of prob 2 screws hold it on

have another key made at walmart,your key is problbly worn out.by having new key made with your worn out key,new key will have better notches to activate tumblers in ignition cyl.also try simply turning steering whrrel hard right &left.steering wheel lock may be keeping cyl frm turning.
