Once the VCR is turned on, it turns itself off.

If there is a mechanism fault on the VCR then the VCR will shut itself down. It sounds like the mechanism might be jammed, it's trying to move to the right position, when power is applied but can't so it stops. One thing that might be wrong is the mode switch might be faulty. This will cause all sorts of thing to happen, including putting on the timer record light even when none has been set.

You just have a dirty main video head. You can get a head cleaner tape or you can buy a tin of Servisol Video 40.
To clean with the Servisol, remove the top cover of the VCR. You will see a big shiny video head. Spray that head with the cleaner. You can also wipe it over with a cotton bud if it is very dirty. It's a good idea to clean all the surfaces that the video tape touches. If you don't know which, when you first take off the cover with the VCR on power, put a video tape in a press play then watch where the tape runs. Eject the tape, then clean with the spray and a cotton bud. You can even spray the cotton bud and then clean with that if you are not happy just spraying into the unit.
Make certain that the sprayed areas are dry before trying a video. It dries very quick anyway.

The sound on my Panasonic pv-4611 fades in and out while watching tapes. Doesn't matter whether they are factory or recorded ones by myself. Why?

This sounds like the Hi-Fi sound dropping out. It's mostly caused by dirt on the main video head. You need to clean it with either Servisol Video 40 or a head cleaning tape.

I don't recognize your first problem.  The "light to dark" issue I believe is intentionally engineered (mine does it too); it prevents recording DVDs on to tape.  Try running the DVD player directly to the TV.  Radio Shack used to have a box that would correct this issue too, you might check there.
