My LG LCD TV (Model LG42LH3000) screen stays black, then flashes thin lines or thick bands of colour before finally coming on after up to 40 minutes warming up - although lately it's not switching to normal viewing at all. If the picture does restore, it can often have a green glow to it. This happens on all inputs. Sound works fine. Any ideas?

This sounds like a screen problem, possibly the internal connecting cable (LVDS) which connects from the main board to the screen may have become loose. If not a replacement screen would be required.

it seems to be a bad connection somewhere but I disconnected the ribbon cable and got a verticle line of snow instead of a blank line. the line is about 34 mm wide and starts 285 mm from the left edge starts on the Blue and goes to the Red pixels. so if they are 1mm wide that would be 34 bands of color.
I would sure like to figure out the solution to this one or I got a TV I need to throw away cause the o'lady is gonna bust my balls if I can't fix this!

From your description, the sound you are hearing is the inverter(s) that drive the back light for the LCD screen/module.
The inverters mounted on the back side (one lower right and one left side) of the LCD screen/module. They are under the sheet metal cover/shields.
The inverters are going out and or the LCD screen/module is going bad too.
That LG TV has only a 1 year on parts and labor from the date of purchase, but you could call LG and ask for their help for such a new TV. They might do it under a warranty, for little or no cost to you.
I hope this information has helped you.
Good Luck.
